**Did you know?**
The Financial and Enterprise Risk (FER) department supports an enterprise-wide view of risk management across the Bank of Canada. Reporting to the Deputy Managing Director of the Department and to the Chief Risk Officer of the Bank, the Enterprise Risk Office (ERO) monitors, reports and advises on enterprise and operational risks.
The Principal Risk Management Specialist is a key contributor in developing and enhancing all aspects of the Bank’s ERM policy, framework, processes and tools. By participating in and leading risk-management initiatives, the Principal Risk Management Specialist promotes effective risk management through high-quality risk-management approaches built on strong working relationships with key stakeholders.
**What you will do**
Reporting directly to a Director of ERO, you will provide expert advice on business issues, and be a key contributor in developing and implementing the team’s strategic direction and vision. In particular, you will:
- provide analysis and advice to Bank leadership and departments, including guidance on the Bank’s ERM framework and processes, and participating in broad Bank initiatives as the ERM expert;
- have a leadership role in the risk-profiling processes - this includes managing from inception to delivery substantial cross-Bank initiatives, facilitating workshops, compiling and analyzing risk-management information, providing feedback and advice on the risk profiles, and drafting reports for executive management and the Board of Directors;
- provide advice, guidance, and training on business issues to ERO analytical staff;
- promote best practices in the Bank and externally, by partnering with the Bank’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line of defence risk-management functions, offering risk-awareness sessions, and providing expertise and knowledge-sharing;
- actively seek out and work with external counterparts—other central banks, government, risk-management professional networks—and conduct research to build your understanding of best practices and emerging risk-management issues.
**What you need to succeed**
You are passionate about risk and curious to understand how the big picture fits together. You enjoy and take pride in working collaboratively and building positive working relationships, in order to deliver on commitments and lead projects effectively. You seek exciting and meaningful work.
This position requires:
- advanced knowledge of ERM concepts and practices including policies, frameworks, risk appetite, the three lines of defence risk governance model and the Risk Self-Assessment process
- experience leading on specialized areas of risk such as third party, fraud, cyber security, conduct, financial, people, emerging, and/or Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) risks
- superior skills in strategic thinking, analysis and synthesis
- experience collaborating with diverse groups across an organization to achieve strategic objectives
- a commitment to intentionally embed diversity and inclusion into all aspects of ERO business
- excellent communication and influencing skills in the creation and delivery of reports, presentations and workshops for a range of expert and non-expert audiences
- ability to establish and maintain effective and trusting professional relationships with staff at all levels of the organization as well as with external stakeholders
