**Employment end date**:October 31, 2025, with possibility of extension
**Background**:Gerstein Crisis Centre is a 24-hour, community-based crisis response service for mental health crisis intervention in the downtown Toronto area. We operate two residential facilities with a total of 24 beds. Gerstein on Charles, which has 10 beds, offers short-term stays (3-5 days) at the Centre for individuals experiencing mental health crises. Additionally, Gerstein on Charles have a 24-hour crisis line and mobile crisis intervention team.
Gerstein Crisis Centre (GCC) believes in community-based responses that create low barrier access to mental health services. Our experience over the past three decades has demonstrated that this early intervention can put needed support in place, connect people to the immediate and ongoing support they need, and often avoid involuntary interactions with emergency services such as hospitals and police.
**Job Summary**:The Community Crisis Intervention Worker (CCIW) provides telephone and in-person crisis intervention, de-escalation, crisis management, and referrals for individuals in mental health and/or substance use crises. During telephone interaction, the CCIW assesses the service user's needs and collaboratively formulates a crisis management and safety plan, incorporating personal coping tools and community support. Services may include mobile crisis visits and short-term crisis bed stays. The CCIW will work collaboratively with community members to provide help and assistance that is adapted to diverse needs and includes diversion away from unnecessary police or medical emergency response.
**Successful applicants will have**:
- at least three-five years of experience working in community mental health, crisis intervention, substance use specific services or experience in a related field;
- a broad understanding of all the factors that impact an individual’s mental health and well-beingincluding the social determinants of health, trauma, poverty and homelessness;
- a demonstrated ability to provide crisis intervention and utilize de-escalation strategies andinterventions;
- a demonstrated ability to provide suicide risk assessment and interventions using the ASIST(Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) model;
- a demonstrated ability to work with issues related to substance use and concurrent disorderswithin a harm reduction framework;
- a demonstrated understanding of issues related to involvement in the Mental Health and JusticeSystem;
- a demonstrated ability to adapt interventions to ensure equity, access, and accommodation;
- a demonstrated commitment to working through an Anti-Racist, Anti-Oppression, Traumainformed lens;
- a demonstrated ability to provide and adapt interventions to a diverse client group includingPersons with Disabilities, Black, Indigenous, Racialized, LGBTQI2S+ and Neurodiverse communities;
- an extensive working knowledge of community supports available in the City of Toronto;
- a demonstrated capability to be flexible and to work under pressure;
- a demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
- a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clients, community partners and serviceproviders and make appropriate use of resources;
- a demonstrated understanding of issues related to involvement in the Mental Health and JusticeSystem;
- a current and working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act andP.H.I.P.A.;
- strong organizational and time-management skills
- strong oral and written communication skills in English

- Working knowledge of OCAN (Ontario Common Assessment of Need) assessments is an asset
- University/College Degree in related field or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education

**Please note**:
- The work schedule will consist of three fixed day shifts or overnight shifts, each a 12-hour shift, including weekdays, weekends and holidays. Additionally, 1.5 hours will be used for meetings, resulting in a total of 37.5 working hours per week.
- The primary work location will be within a residential setting.
- The position includes some light housekeeping and cooking.
