DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Manager of the Diagnostic Assessment Programs and Clinical Genetics, the Genetic Counsellor provides genetic assessment and counselling for individuals and families with a medical history of, or at increased risk for, having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition, or who are themselves at risk for a genetic disorder, including hereditary predisposition to cancer.
The Genetic Counsellor assists individuals and families to comprehend the medical facts, including the diagnosis, the etiology, and the available management. The genetic counsellor helps them to make informed medical and personal decisions and provides psychological support and advocacy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master of Science in Genetic Counselling from an accredited university.
- Certification by American Board of Genetic Counselors and/or Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors is preferred.
- Recent genetic counselling experience (minimum of 1 year in a clinical setting) is preferred.
- Proven critical thinking skills, organizational skills, decision-making skills, and ability to readily comprehend and disseminate complex and rapidly changing genetic information.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current literature and relevant developments in clinical practice and research.
- Demonstrated ability to identify psychodynamic, ethnocultural, and ethical issues and alter to counselling plan of care appropriately.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative and leadership as appropriate.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, analytical skills using evidence-based best practices.
- Effective computer skills at an intermediate level (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, Publisher.

- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety and environmental safety and participation in regular in-service education in this area.
