Maintenance Supervisor

**Company Summary**:Arbutus Grove Nursery is located on 30 acres in beautiful North Saanich, BC. We specialize in growing containerized seedlings for reforestation, serving forest companies, government agencies, First Nations bands and woodlot owners throughout British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. We also provide seed preparation services and seedling cold storage and warehousing on site. We are a committed team of 14 full-time employees with a seasonal workforce of up to 50 additional people during our peak time. We work hard year round to ensure that the 13 million + seedlings we grow are healthy and strong and ready to be planted in BC and PNW forests to support the forestry industry and the environment. **Role Summary**: Reporting to the AGN Nursery Manager, our Maintenance Supervisor will help the Maintenance and Infrastructure Manager (MIM) oversee all nursery infrastructure repair and upkeep. Your responsibilities will include safely assisting the MIM in managing the maintenance team, as well as external contractors and suppliers to ensure the nursery growing and production infrastructure is ready to use and in good repair. The goal is to ensure that AGN facilities are well cared for and adequate to support our growing operations and any future expansions are well executed. This can be a career role with opportunities for training, development and advancement.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:Our Maintenance Supervisor will have a general “do it yourself” skillset and be able to carry out a broad range of tasks including trouble shooting/repair/improvement of:

- nursery irrigation systems
- production equipment (we sow and harvest over 13 million trees per year on our production lines)
- greenhouse systems
- low voltage electrical systems
- wood structures
- heating systems

They will participate in and role model AGN’s safety program as safety is our highest priority in carrying out maintenance tasks with a goal to take a role on the Joint Health and Safety Committee. This role will also participate in and eventually lead nursery projects. They will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining supply inventories electronically.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with coworkers (and politely)

- Initiate tasks as needed and work independently
- Take ownership of the safety, upkeep, organization, appearance and management of our facility infrastructure, equipment and tools

**Training Desired**:

- Experience and/or education in a relevant trade: plumbing, machine works, electrical, carpentry, welding, irrigation or greenhouse infrastructure and maintenance
- Experience working with machinery and tools
- Experience using a computer and excel for inventory tracking or similar tasks
- Supervisory experience an asset
- Valid driver’s license required

**Measure of Effectiveness**:

- Team safety record (lost time days)
- Amount of equipment related downtime during production (lifting, sowing)
- Nursery infrastructure, equipment and tools upkeep, organization and appearance
- Improvement ideas suggested (safety, quality, production, morale) and adopted

**Hours and Workdays**: Regular hours are 7:30-4 or 5 depending on the season (longer hours in the fall and winter). There may be occasional weekend or evening work when crop sensitive maintenance issues arise or critical weather is in play.

**Compensation**: Starting wage for this position will be $26.78 per hour. AGN has a comprehensive benefits and compensation plan for permanent employees after the probationary period including: a nursery performance bonus of approx. 10% annual salary paid in bi-annual installments, Extended health, vision and dental care, extra 80 hrs pay Christmas bonus, 50% RRSP matching up to 6% of wages, wellness benefits of $500 annually, birthday off with pay, and opportunity for regular raises. These additional benefits total to $5-6 per hour of value.
