**Description**:
Reporting to the Claims Supervisor, the Liability Claims Examiner will be responsible for the day-to-day activities involved in investigating, assessing liability and developing a resolution strategy for a diverse range of liability claims.

**Responsibilities**:

- Examine casualty claim files with an opportunity to handle complex liability files and professional liability claims
- Investigate claims either directly or through an adjuster and then provide a coverage assessment for the insured by reviewing the insurance contract and all relevant claim materials
- Assess the exposure from a claim and then develop a resolution strategy
- Negotiate claim settlement directly with claimant or opposing counsel
- Work with external counsel in developing a litigation strategy for claims in litigation
- Oversee and provide direction to external counsel
- Attend mediations and settlement conferences
- Conduct legal research, analysis and file review
- Organize and maintain active files in proper order for examining and reserve review
- Negotiate settlement of claims with insureds, claimants and plaintiff lawyers
- Provide direction to claims adjusters in handling of claims
- Maintain detailed on-line diary notes

**Qualifications**:

- A minimum of 5 years experience in Property & Casualty Insurance claims
- Strong organizational skills, with good attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- University or College education preferable, in a business or analytical discipline is an asset
- Bilingual in French and English is an asset
