Deputy Ministers serve as bridges between the governing and administrative functions of government, translating government priorities into public service outcomes and actions. They lead across department boundaries to ensure that government policy and strategic priorities are aligned and addressed from a holistic, systems-wide perspective. Together they create an integrated, inclusive, engaged, and citizen-centered public service.

We are currently recruiting to the Deputy Minister position in Alberta Justice. This position also serves as the Deputy Attorney General. The ministry administers courts in Alberta and provides criminal prosecution services, information and dispute resolution options for people accessing the court system, and legal and related strategic services to government. It administers federal firearms legislation and advocates for Alberta’s lawful firearms owners. Alberta Justice oversees the delivery of legal aid to Albertans through an agreement with the Law Society of Alberta and Legal Aid Alberta. It also facilitates the enforcement of child and spousal support orders and provides forensic death investigations into sudden, unexpected or unexplained deaths in Alberta.

**Role**:
As an active member of Deputy Ministers’ Council, a key focus of your role is a shared accountability for delivering on government mandates. Through leadership and collaboration with your department executive team, partners and other stakeholders, you will oversee programs and services that provide innovative, high quality and well-designed justice services such as Court Services, Crown Prosecution, Maintenance Enforcement Program and Medical Examiner services. You will articulate a vision for the successful achievement of outcomes in the ministry’s core business areas.

An understanding of government operations and experience with accountability for significant financial management are assets. A law degree and eligibility for membership in the Law Society of Alberta are required.
