The **Carpenter** is part of a crew that builds, renovates, and repairs wooden structures in a marine environment, frequently accessed by a barge or tugboat on water. Reporting to the Carpentry Foreman, you will work closely with the carpentry team, our team in the fabrication shop, and other technical project staff. Overnight travel and overtime are required from time to time.
**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES**
**Safety**:
- The Carpenter must promote a safe work culture and is accountable to adhere to the Health & Safety (H&S) instruction provided by the Lead Hand or the Foreman that may arise due to changing site conditions or experience.
- Knows, understands, communicates, and ensures compliance with the safety regulations (Health & Safety Act) and safety policies and procedures outlined by the company.
- Completes incident and other safety reports in a timely manner.
- Participates in company safety initiatives, including safety meetings and training, as requested.
- Restricts the use of cell phone to company business only through the workday.
**Work Environment & Work Product**:
- Repairs, renovates, and constructs wooden structures including but not limited to framing, trusses, roofing, siding, soffit, fascia, windows and doors for stationary and floating docks, floating and stationary boat houses, and ports.
- Measures, calculates, cuts, shapes, smooths, and joins materials made of wood or wood substitutes.
- Reads and interprets drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
- Builds scaffolding and other construction structures.
- Clearly and professionally interacts and communicates with Lead Hand, Foreman, and other team members such as company supervisors, inspectors, and clients.
- Discusses and plans with the Lead Hand or Foreman the proposed work of the day; includes taking personal responsibility to understand the work at hand and ask clarifying questions to perform the work.
- Follows established work standards and behavioural expectations to contribute to crew morale and productivity while representing the company to the best of their ability.
- Follows instructions on project plans and schedules and ensuring that personal daily and weekly activities meet production goals.
- Ensures that time is entered on time each day, and accurately allocated.
- Demonstrates a willingness to travel away from home.
- Ensures that tools and equipment needed for the day are available, well looked after and returned to the yard in good working condition (or that maintenance items are escalated appropriately).
- Always ensures that our work is carried out in an environmentally responsible manner.
- If using a company credit card, submit all receipts with descriptions on a weekly basis.
- Ensures that only positive and pro-active social media posts are generated, and only when appropriate to do so.
**Maintenance**:
- Cleans and performs minor maintenance of equipment.
- Loads and unloads cargo which may consist of equipment, supplies, materials.
- Helps with docking and rigging.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- Works on a construction site in a marine environment.
- Standard workday hours (7:00am-4:30pm). Longer hours may be required periodically.
- Exposure to all elements - summer heat, rain, cold temperatures, ice, wind, etc.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Repetitive work such as cutting, sanding, joining materials.
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Completion of secondary school preferred
- Successful completion of a carpentry apprenticeship preferred
- Proven carpentry experience, with minimum of 3 years related experience.
- Hands-on experience in working with carpentry materials.
- Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction.
- Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.).
- Able to read technical drawings and documents.
**OTHER REQUIREMENTS**
- Good understanding of basic math.
- Good physical condition and endurance.
- Has and maintains a Class G drivers’ license with clean driving record.
- Has or is willing / able to obtain a class “A” restricted license considered an asset
