**GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY**

**NATURE AND SCOPE**

The Skilled Labourer/Equipment Operator receives direction from the Site Supervisor. The incumbent works well independently as well as collaborates successfully with colleagues and subcontractors to carry out responsibilities. Travel to various sites may be required.

**SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES**

**Skilled Labourer**
- Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards and ensure optimization of construction work procedures
- Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities
- Assist tradespersons such as welders, pipefitters etc. in construction activities
- Operate construction-related equipment (e.g., driving trucks or forklifts etc.) to transport materials and equipment
- Operate large powered machinery and equipment (e.g., saws, drills, grinders, blowtorches, pressure cleaners, jackhammers).
- Erect temporary structures and scaffolding
- Place traffic signs to warn traffic of construction in process
- Clean and maintain construction equipment appropriately
- Align structural components according to blue prints
- Ensure that all work is being done safely and in compliance with company protocol
- Train apprentices and new hires in construction labor work
- Use hand tools to cut and shape material

**Equipment Operation**
- Capable of operating multiple pieces of construction equipment used in

construction, base preparation, construction, and paving.
- Operate all equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
- Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill the equipment as necessary.
- Maneuver heavy equipment into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that the vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
- Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
- Use various pieces of equipment to perform fine grading and finishing, sloping and banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating and stockpiling.
- Maintain proper awareness of ones surroundings.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the equipment.
- May mentor, train new employees in the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment.

**Other**
- Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program
- Attend daily and weekly safety meetings and inspections. Work with Safety department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Phoenix Safety Program.
- Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
- Promote a team approach and maintain dialogue with all employees and sub-contractors to exchange information and ideas.
- Other construction related duties as required

**SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE**
- Minimum 3 years related experience
- Knowledge of construction materials and processes and industry requirements.
- Places safety as top priority for themselves and coworkers
- Demonstrated ability to work under mínimal supervision
- Manual Dexterity: Repeated and coordinated use of your arms, hands, wrists, and fingers to use handheld tools
- Physical Strength and stamina: Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to hold, push, pull, lift and carry heavy items
- Ability to use proper lifting techniques to lift items weighing in excess of 50 lbs.
- Ability to work with others in a team
- Ability to operate required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
- Oral and written comprehension - Demonstrated ability to follow instructions

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
- Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience within the construction industry, downstream petroleum industry preferred
- Heavy equipment operation certifications considered an asset
- Class 3 or 1 license preferred
- 3 + years’ experience operating a diverse range of hand tools and construction equipment
- First aid certification would be an asset
- Ground disturbance level 1 or 2
- P.O.S.T and C.S.T.S Training would be an asset
- Must be willing to learn and be open to completing required safety training, or industry standard training to advance knowledge and be successful
- Must successfully complete drug and alcohol testing
- Experience in construction, industrial and/or petroleum industry is required
- Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Valid Canadian passport or ability to obtain one
- Compensation based on experience
