**Primary Objectives**:
The Controller is primarily accountable for managing all the day to day accounting responsibilities for the organization. The Controller is accountable for assisting the Director of Finance in strategic and operational planning decisions, as well as ensuring organizational compliance with risk management and reporting obligations.
**Key Responsibilities**:
1. As a member of the organization’s Management Team, the position is accountable for:
- contributing to operational planning and to resolving critical issues as they arise in relation to staffing, employee relations and management of accounting functions;
- Works closely with other Managers and Directors in the daily management of financial-related matters.
- participating in, and demonstrating an on-going commitment to the organization’s strategic priorities, mission, vision and values
- supporting the Director of Finance as an expert resource on improving financial performance, and ensuring accuracy of financial information
- Supervision of the finance team, including participating in the selection process and ensuring staff receive adequate orientation and training.
2. Supports the Director of Finance in the management and administration of all general accounting services inclusive of all financial operations, transactions, investments, cash management, receivables and payables, financial reporting, fund source management and other related financial activities, including:
- formulating plans to mitigate financial and business risks including drafting policy proposals for the Director of Finance’s review;
- Working with the Director of Finance and other departments to update the Financial Policy Manual and implementation of internal controls;
- planning, organizing and directing the Society’s income and expenditure accounting and fiscal record-keeping activities;
- establishing, improving, documenting and co-ordinating accounting and financial processes;
- reviewing budget estimates and developing preliminary and final budgets with input from all departments;
- compiling reports of revenue estimates;
- making special expenditure and costs analyses and preparing reports;
- planning and presenting long-range fiscal planning for capital spending and investment;
- Ensuring proper financial management of capital and development projects, including timely processing of payments;
- Coordinating the annual audit and government filings including preparing schedules, supporting documents and drafting financial statements of annual audit; liaises with external auditors;
- Ensuring compliance with various reporting obligations to funders;
- Completing and maintaining the organizations risk-management compliance list;
- designing financial and management reports and publishing financial statements;
- maintaining accurate financial records in accordance with Canadian GAAP;
- maintaining strong internal controls and ensuring CRA compliance;
- supervising the inventory of supplies, equipment and the maintenance of inventory records;
- preparing a variety of financial statements and statistical reports for funding agencies.
- collection of rents, damage deposits, parking and utility charges and other Society revenues;
- Other responsibilities that may arise from time to time.
- oversees preparation of payroll for salaried staff and non-salaried staff.
- management of the Rental Supplement program;
- payment of vendors, employees and others by cheque and EFT;

**Qualifications (minimum Education and Experience requirements)**:

**Education**:
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent experience required (Master’s Degree considered an asset)
**Experience**:
- A minimum of four years (4) progressively more responsible professional accounting or financial auditing experience is required
- Two years (2) supervisory experience is required
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Superior knowledge of Canada Revenue reporting requirements and the various Acts and Legislation related to financial accounting and reporting for charitable organizations in Canada and in BC
