We are seeking a Laboratory Scientist to join our team at the Fish Health Lab in Duncan, BC. The Laboratory Scientist plays a key role in the operation of the Fish Health Laboratory. This position reports to the Manager, Fish Health and is responsible for the testing of fish pathogens using molecular tools and, when required, the development and/or validation of molecular diagnostic assays. The position also provides training, supervision, and oversight to other laboratory staff in molecular diagnostic techniques and ensures a quality assurance program for all molecular assays used in the laboratory. The position is a senior fish health professional in the organization and utilizes specialized technical and analytical skills to identify, plan, design and provide diagnostic services and maintain accurate diagnostic records. The Laboratory Scientist develops fish health policy, provides specialized fish health advice and helps to manage service delivery to hatchery Fish Culture staff, Hatchery Managers and Provincial and FFSBC Fisheries biologists.

**Qualifications**:

- Ph.D. or M.Sc. in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related discipline and three years of experience; or a B.Sc. with 5 years’ experience and a similar background.
- Prior supervisory experience in a laboratory setting and experience in leading staff on projects or program delivery is required.
- Cell culture experience is preferred. Experience in cell culture working with fish pathogens is desirable.
- Experience in bacteriology is preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience and/or training may be considered.
- Lesser qualified applicants may be under-implemented, and an eligibility list may be created for a period of up to one year.
