Mechanical Piping/plumbing Estimator

Leduc, Canada Strathcona Mechanical LTD Full time

As a Mechanical Estimator, you will be integral to our construction projects, reporting directly to the Senior Estimator. Your primary responsibility will be to assist in preparing accurate cost estimates and pricing for various mechanical construction tasks. Utilizing core skills in mechanical estimating and pricing, you will leverage premium skills such as Bluebeam and negotiation to enhance project proposals. Strong communication skills will be essential in collaborating with team members and stakeholders, ensuring that all project requirements are met efficiently.

**Qualifications**
- Proficiency in mechanical estimating and pricing techniques
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration
- Experience with Bluebeam software for project documentation
- Negotiation skills to manage project costs and quotations
- Familiarity with project management principles
- Knowledge of Google Sheets / Microsoft Excel software is a plus

**Scope of Work**
- A mechanical estimator begins by thoroughly reviewing the project’s Scope of Work. This document outlines all the tasks required to complete the project. It includes technical details, specifications, and any other relevant information.
- If any details or specifications are missing, the estimator may issue a Request for Information (RFI) to clarify those points.

**Site Assessment**:

- Before diving into the estimate, estimators often visit the construction site. Why? Well, there are two main reasons:

- Access and Logistics: They assess how easy it is to transport materials to the site. For instance, areas with limited access or hilly terrain might require specialized equipment and more labor.
- Equipment Considerations: The site location influences the type of equipment that can be used. Different sites may require different machinery. This impacts labor hours and equipment rates.
- Weather conditions and the time of year also play a role in their assessment.

**Quantity Takeoff and Estimation**:

- Using construction drawings, specifications, and the validated Scope of Work, the estimator performs a detailed quantity takeoff. This involves quantifying materials, labor, and other resources needed for the project.
- Bluebeam is commonly used to produce accurate quantity takeoffs.

**Cost Estimation**:

- The mechanical estimator calculates both hard costs (direct expenses like materials and labor) and soft costs (indirect expenses like overhead and profit margin).
- They consider material prices, labor rates, equipment costs, and any other relevant factors.
- The accuracy of their estimate significantly impacts whether the project is profitable and competitive.

**Vendor and Subcontractor Interaction**:

- Estimators collaborate with vendors, subcontractors, and contractors to gather pricing data.
- They evaluate subcontractor bids and negotiate pricing and scope of work.
- Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential here.

**Decision Support**:

- Ultimately, the estimator’s job is to provide decision-makers (such as project managers or clients) with reliable pricing data.
- Based on their compiled estimates, project stakeholders make informed decisions about moving forward with the project.

**Continuous Learning and Adaptation**:

- The construction industry evolves, and so do technologies and materials. Mechanical estimators need to stay updated on industry trends, new materials, and cost fluctuations.
- They adapt their estimating methods to changing circumstances.
