Beyond project leadership, the incumbent will share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training initiatives, both within TRIUMF and with national and international collaborators. They will also contribute to the next generation of talent by supporting internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.
Finally, the Specialist will help foster strategic partnerships with Canadian academia and industry to further strengthen TRIUMF’s ML and QI initiatives and broaden their impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with research groups to identify opportunities where ML and QI can improve scientific output.
- Provide guidance in developing and adapting innovative methodologies to achieve research objectives.
- Co-supervise students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in related projects.
- Leading role in R&D activities enabling use of advanced compute accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, Quantum Computing) at the Canadian ATLAS Tier-1 Centre.
- Share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training opportunities at TRIUMF and with national/international collaborators.
- Contribute to training and mentorship through internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry to expand TRIUMF’s ML and QI initiatives and their impact.
- Work on complex issues that require in-depth evaluation of variable factors and make non-routine decisions on project work where a high degree of accuracy and sound judgement are vital, as errors in detail or in decisions could lead to setbacks with research programs.
- Determine selection criteria for methods and techniques used in individual projects and have the ability to present complex ideas to interdisciplinary teams and team leaders anticipating objections and concerns.
- Responsible for objectives with long timelines with impact on several teams and lead cross-functional work that extends beyond their own area of expertise.
- Developing a professional network within the institution, nationally and internationally among academic and business leaders.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities associated with the position. However, the incumbent will act as a mentor and provide guidance to TRIUMF’s scientific users, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students at TRIUMF.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Excellent leadership, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, planning skills, attention to detail, and flexibility to deal with changing priorities
- The ability to work independently and to anticipate researchers’ need

- Machine Learning
- Large Scale computing
- Quantum Computing
- Quantum Annealing
- Quantum Assisted Machine Learning
- Generative Models
- Software development / coding python, julia, deep learning libraries (pytorch tensorflow), scientific computing libraries (sklearn, scipy, matplotlib), c++ beneficial

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- PhD in the natural sciences or computer science with domain knowledge in at least two of TRIUMF’s scientific fields.
- A demonstrated research record and previous experience in scientific computing
- Typically 8 years of relevant professional experience
COMPENSATION:
Annual salary would be $111.775.00 CAD plus our comprehensive benefits package.
