**Position Overview**: *
The Senior Engineer, Optical Transport Network, will be responsible for planning and costing XCI metro, regional and long/mid-haul optical transport network. As a member of the XCI National Standard team, the Senior Engineer, Optical Transport Network, will develop, review and update optical transport network engineering standards and architecture to meet current technology and optimize the network. You will review the existing transport network, analyze vulnerable points within the network and recommend a network diversity plan.
This is a Remote position.
**Key responsibilities include**:
- Plan XCI national optical transport network by ensuring that specifications/plans have been engineered to acceptable standards.
- Develop a cost model for XCI’s optical transport networks.
- Develop and present the engineering plans for transport network expansions/upgrades.
- Develop, review and update XCI’s optical transport engineering standards and architecture to meet current technology and maintain network optimization.
- Perform lab evaluation and testing for optical transport hardware components and associated software.
- Reviewing existing transport network, analyze vulnerable points within the network and recommend a network diversity plan.
- Evaluate and build a business case for lease fibre from 3rd party and analyze the performance.
- Perform analysis of and recommendations for different transport technical options
- Work closely with Network Operation to analyze optical transport network performance and KPIs.
- Provide engineering support for XCI optical transport network implementation and testing.
- Develop standardization and operational integrity of XCI national and metro transport networks.
- Lead lab evaluation and testing for Optical Transport hardware and software.
- Test and develop solution and service architecture.
- Evaluate optical transport products and test for performance.
- BASc or MASc or Ph.D. in Electrical or Optical communication engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
- 8+ years of experience in optical transport network planning and engineering with 5 years with a major telecom operator.
- Advanced knowledge of optical transport communication, SONET, DWDM, CWDM, Ethernet and transport technologies.
- Experience in commissioning, provisioning, integration and troubleshooting optical transport networks.
- Advanced knowledge of optical network components and how they impact the overall performance and cost of the network.
- Experience in optical signalling and fibre characterization.
- Experience in evaluating optical transport products and testing for performance in a lab.
- Advanced knowledge in developing solutions and service architecture for the optical transport network.
- Working knowledge in designing Layer 2 and Layer 3 IP networks.
- Ability to use AutoCAD with specialized toolsets, network planning and optimization modelling software, ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, and Microsoft 365.
- Ability to analyze data and utilize it to make sound engineering and business decision.
- Detail-oriented, proven accuracy with reporting, results-focused and the ability to organize and manage multiple projects.
- Ability to work within a dynamic team and cross-functional collaboration with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Remote or Hybrid or normal office hours
- Moderate travel as required
- General working hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
