Reporting to and under the direction of the Resident Services Supervisor, the Recreation Aide implements pre-planned, meaningful recreational programs on site and occasionally off site for residents residing at Maple View Lodge both individually and in group settings with an energetic and compassionate approach. The Recreation Aide is responsible for planning activities with a holistic approach to instill physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social well being within the lives of the residents.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

**Education, Certification & Licenses**
- As per the LTC ACTT 2007, “After July 1, 2010 a staff member providing Recreational and Social Activities Services at the home must have a post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related field from a community college or university, OR, be enrolled in a community college or university diploma or degree program in such a field. The home must cease to employ a staff member who is hired to provide these services if the person ceases to be enrolled in the program, or fails to successfully complete the program within three years of being hired.”
- CPR and First Aid Certification required

**Experience**
- 2 years’ experience working in a long term care home or working with the elderly population
- Experience in developing and implementing recreation programming and interventions is considered an asset
- Experience in reporting resident responses, reaction and behavior through written and oral communications.
- Best Practice Champion and/or experience in quality initiatives is considered an asset

**Knowledge**
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook) as well as medical documentation software such as Point Click Care and Activity Pro.
- Knowledge of the 5 domains of Recreation Therapy.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to respect the confidentiality of information and exercise tact and diplomacy.

**KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Implements and facilitates a variety of activities and recreational interventions both inside and outside of the home that meet all 5 domains of Recreation Therapy under the supervision of the Resident Services Supervisor.
- Remains current with modern technology to enhance the resident programming experience and communications, especially in times of isolation and or outbreak.
- Performs required recreational assessments such as; Resident Assessment Instrument Mini-Data Set (RAI-MDS) coding and new admission assessments as well as care plans to reflect resident involvement in programs, activity goals and interventions to ensure a person centered plan of care. Performs program audits in order to evaluate resident program experiences and modifies and or changes activities to best suit the resident population based on needs and or desires. Modifies and or changes programming in the moment based on resident response and participation. Removes residents from programs should they become unsuitable for a particular program. Performs all required recreational assessments to gauge resident interest and or change in interest on an on going basis.
- Works cohesively with the care team and communicates up-coming programs and activities as well as advocates for residents to experience desired programs by remaining flexible and mediating what may appear as potential barriers such as care, medication times and more.
- Implements activity programs in a manner that focuses on the satisfaction of the residents and fully supports their rights.
- Audits programs and implements modifications based on resident response and needs.
- Provides assistance in the management of program supplies, including sanitation for infection control reasons.
- In conjunction with the Resident Services supervisor, the Recreation Aide actively participates and contributes by providing input into planning the monthly activity calendar based on resident interests, desires, seasonal holidays and themes whilst continuing to stay up to date with current recreation trends amongst the elderly population through education and conferences.
- Monitors resident interests, needs and progress as well as maintains program and resident records and documentation according to departmental policies.
