Respite Caregivers for Children

The REACH Respite Program has numerous openings for experienced respite caregivers to provide hourly and overnight care **in the caregiver’s own home** and/or in the community. This is a contractor position, perfect for those seeking casual/part-time work.
- **Be capable of providing care in their own home.**:
- Have a minimum of 3 years working with individuals with developmental disabilities, a post-secondary certificate in human services or related field, 1 year+ working with individuals who have challenging behaviors or a combination of training and experience.
- have a passion for working with the special needs community
- be able to work independently and follow a child/youth’s care plan in providing support
- be creative in planning activities that reflect the child/youth’s needs / interests
- have access to a vehicle and a clean driving record
- be required to complete a screening process
Experience and knowledge of Indigenous culture is an asset.
Examples of Opportunities:
1) Outgoing, talkative and generally happy 12 yr old Metis boy with ASD, ADHD and anxiety who enjoys playing guitar, nature-based activities, thrift/charity shopping, STEM/Robotics, trying different musical instruments at Tom Lee music and swimming. He is independent in all areas of personal care and would like a caregiver who is familiar with Indigenous culture and enjoys similar activities to provide hourly and overnight care in the caregiver’s home and in the community.
2) Empathetic, creative and social 13 year old Indigenous boy with ASD, ADHD, and Reactive Attachment Disorder who enjoys cooking/baking, drawing, video games and basketball. He is independent in all areas of personal care, and would benefit from a skilled caregiver with a sense of humour. The family is seeking care in the community, as well as hourly and overnight care in the caregiver’s home.
3) Friendly, energetic and talkative 16 year old girl with Autism and Moderate Intellectual Disability; who enjoys going to parks, the beach and for walks, along with swimming and listening to music. Seeking a caregiver to provide care in the caregiver’s home as well as the community. This position is hourly to start, potentially shifting to overnight care in the future. Some knowledge of Cantonese an asset but not required.
As a REACH respite caregiver, you’ll:
- build relationships
- give families temporary relief from the challenges of caring for a child with a developmental disability
- provide a child or youth with the opportunity to participate in activities and learn new things
- have a flexible schedule
- learn new skills from trainings offered
- earn $23-$27 per hr
