Legion Manor Victoria is a not-for-profit retirement residence located on the beautiful Saanich Peninsula of Greater Victoria. This time, we are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and reliable **1st Cook** who is able to maintain Legion Manor standards. We go the extra mile to ensure that each member of our staff feels safe, secure, enriched, and empowered in their role, so that everyone under our roof is given the opportunity to thrive and grow every day.
**This is a Wednesday to Sunday position where you will work 10:00am - 6:00 pm. This position is covered under the Single Site Order. The wage is currently being adjusted and topped up by the government as per the Single Site Order. The displayed wage is therefore reflective of such initiative.**
**Full Employer paid benefits will be available after 3 months completion of your probationary period.**
Under the direction of the Head Chef, you will be responsible for daily meal preparation from pre-determined menus, ensuring food quality and presentation standards and contributes to the smooth operation of the kitchen.
**Key Responsibilities**:
Ø Work closely with the Executive Chef to keep residents satisfied with food and dining programs.
Ø Maintain kitchen and food storage and preparation areas in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition at all times.
Ø Adhere to cleaning schedules as assigned.
Ø Ensure that all food is received, stored, and prepared according to company standards.
Ø Estimate daily or weekly needs of food and supplies and communicate needs to Head Chef
Ø Participate in preparing and cooking meals according to chef approved menus.
Ø Prepare, cook, and bake a variety of foods, including but not limited to entrees, vegetables, and baked goods.
Ø Adhere to standard food safety practices.
Ø To complete daily temperature audits for fridge, freezers and storerooms and record findings on daily audit form;
Ø To make menu substitutions as necessary and record these in designated place;
Ø To follow and comply with health and safety legislation and departmental safe job procedures;
Ø Establishes and ensures maintenance of food rotations in storage / inventory in order to minimize spoilage and waste
Ø Participate in the cleaning of kitchen area and all equipment using the prescribed safety equipment and approved cleaning chemicals;
**Qualifications**:
- Food handlers permit as required by provincial law and/or Company standards.
- Able to read and follow recipes and printed production guides, cleaning schedules, and logs.
- Knowledge of food handling, preparation, cooking, and service.
- Must have experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in a healthcare or retirement setting.
- An aptitude toward detail and creativity with good planning and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions with mínimal supervision
- Ability to communicated well in written and oral English.
- Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items, and stand for majority of shift
- Must provide current Criminal Record Check (within six months) or be willing to obtain one.
