**Farm Infrastructure & Projects Builder - Back Forty Artisan Cheese & FarmsteadAbout Back Forty Artisan Cheese & Farmstead**
Founded in 2000, Back Forty Artisan Cheese & Farmstead is a family-run farmstead rooted in the craft of raw sheep milk cheese, regenerative farming, and a slower, more intentional way of life. Located along the Canadian Mississippi River in rural Eastern Ontario, the farm is surrounded by forest, fields, and water.
While Back Forty is known publicly for its cheese and food destination — including a seasonal outdoor bistro, farm shop, and tasting room — day-to-day operations are focused on stewardship: caring for land, animals, infrastructure, and community.
The farm maintains a small seasonal team supporting food and cheese operations and is now seeking a **skilled, self-motivated individual with building, carpentry, and practical maintenance skills** to help build and maintain the farm’s infrastructure and support tourism-related projects.
**The Role**
This is a hands-on, seasonal role focused on **farm infrastructure, maintenance, and tourism development projects**. It is physical, outdoors, and ideal for someone who enjoys working independently, solving problems, and taking ownership of projects.
There is potential for this role to grow into a **leadership position**, helping to direct and mentor seasonal WWOOF and Workaway residents on infrastructure, maintenance, and farm projects.
**Key Projects & Tasks for 2026**
- Building a new cow enclosure including installation of a squeeze chute
- Repairing and expanding existing wire field fencing and cedar rail fence lines
- Installing new electric fencing systems
- Repairing or replacing current hog enclosures
- Building and developing WWOOF / Workaway camp infrastructure
- Building infrastructure for farm tourism accommodations
- Supporting firewood processing and seasonal resource preparation
- Maintaining farmstead landscaping for tourism and guest experience (patio projects, lawn and garden care, general grounds upkeep)
- Assisting in hay and field work, including mowing, raking, and baling
- May assist with some garden and orchard work, including planting, weeding, harvesting, and general care
- General farm maintenance and practical “handyman” tasks as needed
**Skills & Experience (Assets, Not All Required)**
- Building and carpentry skills (**strongly preferred**)
- General maintenance, repair, and practical problem-solving skills
- Fence building and repair
- Comfortable using power tools and farm tools
- Mechanical aptitude
- Landscaping, gardening, or orchard experience
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather
- Experience working or leading small teams
Most important is a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
