Child Care Assistant Teacher

MATERNITY LEAVE COVERAGE
The position is responsible to assist the Registered Early Childhood Educator or designate (or as the MEDU approved Lead) to implement and execute activities based on _How Does Learning Happen?_ Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years in either the BGCB’s Toddler or Preschool program(s).
Monday through Friday - as per working schedule - 37.5/40 hours per week
Due to the nature of the Club's business, staff cannot always be confined rigidly to a definite schedule of hours - 'flex' time WILL be required
**TRAINING**:
Education: Secondary School Graduate
Qualifications: Current First Aid/CPR
Experience: 1-2 years previous experience working within a licensed childcare environment or similar would be an asset
- Operate program in compliance with the Child Care Early Years Act
- Provide an environment and program supplies that are safe and free for any hazards to children
- Conduct daily health checks of children, record illness and contact parents when necessary
- Update self and other staff of children’s allergies and other special health conditions
- Adhere to best practices for maintaining health records and administering medication
- Perform administrative tasks such as recording attendance, answering phone, completing accident/incident report or medication reports
- As directed, record daily in program log, any deviations in program/meals, behavioural issues, outside visits (ie. fire, health) and any other information pertaining to the day
- Ensure that program areas and their equipment are maintained in a state that will reflect the high standards of the organization
- Ensure all equipment maintains a level of safety and concerns are reported to supervisor
- Using knowledge of the Pedagogy framework provide suggestions, recommendations, etc., to the Registered Early Childhood Educator and/or Supervisor for the design and program content
- Observe and assess children’s progress and behaviour to ensure programs meet identified individual and group needs
- Attend to toileting, diapering needs of children as required, including toilet training
- Be continuously aware of children’s allergies and other special nutritional and/or health conditions
- Administer First Aid/CPR as necessary
- Interact with children and families in a pleasant, positive, and professional manner
- Maintain open communication with parents regarding their child's needs, child's participation, behaviours and/or any incidents
- Accommodate parent’s instructions for daily care routines
- Assist with the identification of high-risk/high-need children who may require or benefit from specialized opportunities or services
The position has no financial responsibilities
Physical Demands
There are high physical demands associated with this position such as lifting up to 50lbs, bending, squatting, sitting, twisting, reaching, etc..
Working Conditions
Position works in an air conditioned environment, however, is also required to provide several hours of outdoor programming during all seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter)
Due to the number of children serviced the working environment can be extremely loud during peak hours of operation.
The environment can be fast paced and demanding - position is required to be extremely resourceful, ‘think quick on their feet’, manage multiply tasks and issues, able to prioritize and resolve issues effectively, thoroughly, and effectively.
**SUPERVISION**
Character - Position is responsible for the direct supervision of children
Scope - This position is responsible to provide guidance and mentoring moments to placement students and/or volunteers, however, is not responsible for the direct supervision/evaluation of any Club leader(s), students or volunteers on a regular basis
In the temporary absence of the Registered Early Childhood Educator or designate the Assistant Teacher (e.g. illness or vacation) will assume the ‘lead’ position for the program but only on a short and time-limited basis if not MEDU approved as the Lead
