Operations Leader Coding Submission Specialist

The Clinical Coding department is responsible for coding and abstracting data on our patient population for inpatient, day surgery, emergency and specified clinic visits. The data is used by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the Ministry of Health and Unity Health Toronto stakeholders for hospital funding, quality and performance measurement, utilization management and research. The primary goal of the department is to provide timely and accurate data to all stakeholders both internally and externally.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
- Assess data integrity issues and recommend solutions to improve data quality gaps and decrease errors
- Perform regular registration audits on DAD and NACRS to ensure accuracy, consistency and balance against ADT
- In collaboration with Registration and Decision Support, reconcile abstracts with ancillary systems to ensure appropriate abstract types and accounts are created or corrected
- Support the month-end coding process by developing, analyzing, distributing and validating workload distribution
- Perform monthly submission file balancing reviews to ensure complete, accurate data prior to submission
- Review rejected submissions and review submission summaries and perform corrective edits if required
- Provide feedback to Manager on monthly targets projections and make recommendations
- Perform regular audits on monthly coding progress, compile daily reports and distribute
- Maintain abstract integrity of all account changes, deletions and creations as it relates to the abstracts.
- Facilitate relationship building between coding system vendor and coders
- Create and maintain directories within the coding system as needed
- Improve abstract layout to better reflect quality indicators and coding outcomes
- Collaborate with programs and committees in the development of appropriate measures and tools to collect data when new mandates are received from the MOH and CIHI
- Develop, implement and maintain training programs and education materials for new and existing staff
- Act as primary resource for technical coding queries from team
- Support team on any updates to the Canadian Coding Standards and DAD and NACRS abstracting manuals, coding best practices and organization policies and procedures
- Co-facilitate monthly team meetings with Coding Data Quality Specialist
- Stay informed by participating in on-going educational workshops/courses and establish benchmarking best practices to improve professional knowledge of coding processes
- Prepare, maintain and distribute staff schedules, vacation calendars in collaboration with Coding Manager
- Payroll Time entry for Manager approval
- Participate in the hiring, disciple and employee performance appraisals
**Qualifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration or other health discipline preferred
- Graduate from an accredited Health Information Management program
- Certified member of the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM)
- 5 years coding experience, 3 of which should be inpatient coding
- In depth knowledge of the coding and abstracting, ICD-10-CA/CCI classification system, HIG/CMG+/CACS grouping methodologies
- Proven oral and written communication skills
- Proven interpersonal skills
