**About Our Opportunity**
Under the direction of the Client Service Manager, the Collector is responsible for the collection of rental arrears and tenant charges. The Collector provides financial counseling to tenants regarding arrears with the goal of maintaining tenancy and reducing the volume of arrears and write-offs.
**Primary Accountabilities**
- Monitor current tenant accounts and contact them by phone, letter or in person to get tenant repayment commitments.
- Advise and work with tenants to ensure they are aware of all payment options and assist with setting up trustee accounts with outside agencies.
- Provide timely information to the Client Service Manager about the progress of accounts and potential issues and make recommendations regarding Residential Tenancy activities for mediated settlements and, in the case of failed settlements, termination of tenancy.
- Attend Residential Tenancy hearings and represent the Metropolitan District’s position on mediation and provide evidence of the same.
- Prepare documentation with the Residential Tenancies Board, Small Claims Court and Sheriff Services for requesting Orders of the Director and Judgments.
- Provide monthly statistics to the Client Service Manager outlining number of clients in arrears, verbal agreements, mediated settlements, and monthly goals.
- Attend Smalls Claim Court hearings in person or via conference call which are often held during evening hours.
**Qualifications and Experience**
- Degree or diploma in Commerce or Business Administration plus five years’ collections experience.
- General knowledge that the source/amount of income and NSPHA Policy may change lease charges and tenant balances.
- Knowledge of Small Claims Court procedures.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of desktop software, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to balance persistent collection efforts with strong personal skills, judgment, and an understanding of the limited income base of most NSPHA tenants.
- Ability to remain calm when provoked or when placed in stressful or emotional situations.
- Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.
**Assets**
- Working knowledge Yardi Property Management software.
- Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.
**Competencies** required at this level of work are Organizational skills, Communication skills, Client Service, and Intercultural & Diversity Proficiency.
