Assessment accommodation **Duties**: The study area covers approximately 2000 km2 and corresponds to the lower portion of the Grand River watershed. It includes two First Nations reserves that have water supply issues. Groundwater flow patterns and the occurrence of poor quality water are particularly complex across this region. The main objective of this PhD thesis is to investigate and characterize the quality of groundwater, also using surface water, air and soil measurements to gain a better insight into contaminant sources. This thesis will involve fieldwork, laboratory analyses and interpretation that will allow to draw up a portrait of the state of contamination in the study area, better understand the hydrodynamics and eventually to anticipate the fate of contaminants in the coming years. Water samples will be collected from monitoring and residential wells, as well as from surface streams. Their analyses will comprise general geochemistry (anions, major/minor/trace metals), nitrate, bacteria (e.g. E-coli), hydrocarbons, as well as multiple isotopic tracers to determine groundwater age (residence time) and identify the probably sources of the various contaminants (e.g. salts from the Salina Formation versus de-icing salts), in order to get a holistic understanding of the interacting processes taking place in this region. Measurements of soil gas and air will include methane, CO2 and H2S. This work will support land use management and the development of plans for future remediation. This thesis is part of a larger multidisciplinary and multi-institutional project. **Intent of the process**: The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a PhD. **Positions to be filled**: 1 **Information you must provide**: Your résumé.
