**Job Summary**:
Reporting to the Chief Water Operator, the Water Operator operates, maintains and repairs, as assigned, all aspects of the Cowichan Bay Waterworks District Class 3 Water Distribution System to deliver clean, potable and safe drinking water to the residents of Cowichan Bay. The Water Operator has superior technical skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and within a team.
**The Role**:
- Operations and maintenance of the Water Distribution System as assigned by the Chief Water Operator.
- Operates, monitors, and maintains water distribution facilities including sites, wells, pumping stations, reservoirs, transmission lines, fire hydrants, valve and meter chambers, manholes, flow meters, pressure reducing valves, and treatment equipment.
- Maintains operating records, submits work progress, time reporting, operations and investigative reports as required.
- Conducts daily, weekly, monthly and annual sampling as per Island Health requirements.
- Monitors SCADA and performs routine maintenance, calibration, and cleaning of chlorine analyzers, and equipment.
- Performs general repairs, housekeeping, painting, site and yard maintenance, debris and windfall removal, brush cutting etc.
- Operates power tools, mowers, jumping jacks and road saws to fulfill the needs of the position.
- Assists in construction duties such as but not limited to, pipeline leak repairs and meter installations.
- Ensures all work is carried out and adheres to WorkSafe BC.
- Reads water meters on a quarterly basis as assigned.
- Available for scheduled on-call rotation.
**Job Requirements**:
- High school diploma
- Preferred - BC EOCP Water Operator in Training or subsequent Level 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification.
**Skills and Abilities**:
- Must be physically fit to perform physically demanding work in all types of weather conditions and in a variety of environments, including confined spaces.
- Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment and with mínimal supervision
- Must be able to multi-task and to balance changing workloads and priorities.
- Superior customer service skills and relationship building skills to maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position; willingness and ability to work alone, with the requirement to be on standby.
- Valid Level 5 BC driver’s license.
- Pass and maintain a Criminal Record clearance.
**Job Type**: Part-time
Pay: $32.50-$40.00 per hour
Expected hours: 21 - 35 per week
