A) Job Summary

The Cook prepares and cooks a fresh, nutritious and Kosher lunch meal, which includes soup, entrée, fresh fruit and dessert for 10 - 20, staff and volunteers. The cook orders meat and bread from kosher suppliers, purchases all produce and kitchen supplies from a grocery store and brings to work. Most have a valid driver’s license and own your own car.

B) Duties

1. Cooks nutritious, home-style meals in accordance with L’Chaim’s Kashrut standards.
2. Provides Program Coordinator with a monthly food menu.
3. Accommodates dietary health needs following the directions of the Licensed Practical Nurse or Health Monitor.
4. Serves food in consultation with ADC Administrator, Nurse or designated Supervisor.
5. Cooperates in preparing specific holiday foods under the direction of the program staff and administrator.
6. Performs an inventory of staple supplies (coffee, tea, spices) and restocks them as necessary.
7. Washes and dries dishes (using mechanical dishwasher) and stores them appropriately.
8. Maintain kitchen and food storage and preparation areas in a clean, safe and sanitary condition at all times.
9. Attends in-service and staff development programs, as needed.
10. Adheres to quality enhancement standards and standard food safety practices and health and safety practices.
11. To attend staff meetings, in-services and other necessary training sessions.
12. To work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults (clients).
13. Must provide a complete and current (within six months) a Criminal Record Check or be willing to obtain one.
14. Is expected to be immunized against influenza or wear a mask.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

C) Qualifications
C1) Education, Training and Experience
- High School Diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Completed “Food Safe.”
- Culinary certification or degree from a culinary school.
- 2-3 years of experience as a cook in a hospitality or healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of Kashrut and a willingness to implement L’Chaim’s standard of Kashrut.

C2) Skills and Abilities
- Competence in English: ability to speak, read and write.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Comfortable standing, stopping, squatting, twisting and moving frequently.
- Strong working knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods and safety and sanitation practices.
- To make menu substitutions as necessary.
- Ability to work as a team member with staff and volunteers.
- Ability to adapt and prepare recipes.
- Ability to determine supply needs based on rotating menus.
- Control and minimize waste.
- Ensures that all food is received, stored and prepared according to Worksafe standards.
- Ability to shop within a set budget.
