Elder in Residence

The Elder in Residence program aims to ensure Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and approaches to wellness are honoured at Crabtree Corner Community (CTC).
The Elder in Residence provides: guidance, cultural guidance, peer support, active listening, support and mentorship to participants and their families. The Elder in Residence also provides guidance, mentorship and direction to team members, as requested including the sharing of knowledge/protocol around ceremony and culture, for stronger participant interactions and supporting cultural events on site.
The Elder in Residence may also provide a link between Indigenous community members inclusive of First Nation, Metis and Inuit and Indigenous organizations; works collaboratively with CTC colleagues and participant families/seniors.
**Responsibilities include**:

- Provides guidance and one-on-one support and an Indigenous perspective for participants and their families.
- Assists Crabtree Corner Community Managers in yearly program development
- Shares teachings to participants and their families about traditional knowledge in relation to group or individual family case files.
- Develops and facilitates various Elder/Senior groups or program activities
- Works with various members of the CTC team to support participants and their families.
- Provides access and/or facilitates ceremony and traditional wellness practices.
- Supports relationships between First Nations and other Indigenous peoples, First Nations organizations and partner agencies.
- Supports Cultural Safety program development through methods such as contributing to development & training curriculum and delivering course content.
- Tracks and reports participant interactions and prepares reports/statistics.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- Is recognized as an Elder/Knowledge Keeper in the community with experience working in Metro Vancouver.
- Group facilitation and presentation skills are required.
- Demonstrated skills in community development, advocacy and peer support, as well as knowledge on issues facing families living in severe poverty are desired.
- Knowledge of local resources for referring participants.
- Understanding of the importance of boundaries and flexibility, being adaptable to meet the needs of the participants while maintaining safety.
- Ability to direct, guide and problem solve with families; while maintaining dignity, respect and relationships.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Good organizational, statistical data reporting, planning and good computer skills.
- Excellent communication abilities, interpersonal skills and relationship building skills.
- Demonstrated significant wisdom in areas of Indigenous Knowledge and Teachings.
