Aquatics Monitoring Technicians/techniciens en Surveillance Du Milieu Terrestre

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, northeastern, northwestern and southern Biodiversity and Monitoring Sections are currently seeking individuals on a short-term basis to organize and carry out technical aspects of the Provincial Inland Lakes Fisheries Programs. **Temporary assignments/contracts for up to 16 weeks, with the possibility of extension, throughout Ontario**:
Northwest Region (Thunder Bay): 10-15 positions
Northeast Region (Timmins): 10-15 positions
Southern Region (Bracebridge, Lindsay, Sutton West): 10-15 positions

**What can I expect to do in this role?**

In this role, you will:
- monitor Ontario’s aquatic ecosystems using various sampling methodologies and techniques
- assist with, and conduct surveys while exercising data management skills and adhering to ministry and safety policies
- work outdoors in teams of two or more, often travelling to remote locations and/or operating all-terrain vehicles, boats and snowmobiles
**How do I qualify?**
Mandatory
- You possess, or have the ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card.
- You possess, or have the ability to complete Standard First Aid and CPR training.
- You are willing and able to work weekends and holidays, when required, and to work in remote locations for up to 10 days.
- You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).
Technical knowledge:
- You have the ability to learn about fish sampling protocols, procedures, and fisheries equipment.
- You have the ability to identify fish and collect biological samples.
- You have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Field work:
- You have the ability to undertake fieldwork on water, towing trailers, and working in inclement weather conditions.
- You have experience operating outboard motors and boats.
- You have the ability to navigate on waterbodies with GPS units, charts and maps.
- MED A3 and SVOP certification would be an asset, but not required.
General essential skills:
- You have interpersonal and communication skills to interact with the public and interview anglers.
- You have the ability to collect legible field notes that can be compiled for data analysis.
- You possess problem-solving skills to troubleshoot operational field activities.
- You have the ability to stay focused while performing repetitive tasks
- You have organizational skills and attention to detail.
