The Program
Beacon Hill House (Ft McMurray) - This front-line community living role provides community access support and life skills training for men with developmental disabilities and mental illness.
In Your Role You Will
- Life skills training and independent home living assistance.
- Develop weekly scheduled activities within the home and community.
- Minimize risks and maximize participation/inclusion of the individual’s physical, social and recreational environments.
- Implement person-centered plans designed to support and assist persons in a residential group or private home setting
- Provide client with information, tools and resources to participate in their personal life planning, set goals and/or make decisions.
- Model socially appropriate behaviours (for the individual and the community).
- Administer medical administration or first aid, according to prescribed procedures.
- Participate in shift exchanges, staff communication and communication of issues or concerns.
- Maintain required documentation.
- Assist residential staff when needed.
The Position
You will support persons with developmental disabilities/mental illness by scheduling/participating in weekly activities within the community to help clients develop life skills in pursuit of their goals of living independently and community inclusion.
Staff will drive client(s) to/from community activities in their own vehicle.
Requires a physically active applicant to participate in activities alongside client(s).
Good understanding of nonverbal communication and experience supporting clients with FASD &/or mental illness an asset.
Criminal Record Check/Ministry Check Statement
** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.
- One (1) year experience working with persons with developmental disabilities/mental illness
- MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle
- Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Special Education, Health Care Aide, etc.
- A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices, and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
- Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self help, etc.
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
- Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
