Position Overview:
**Key duties and responsibilities**
- Assist the Prosecutors in the preparation of prosecution cases including the coordination of documentary evidence, property ownership records, corporate searches, conviction records and the drafting of charges and witness statements.
- Liaise with municipal staff, police and enforcement agencies on legal requirements for the preparation of by-law charges including documenting evidence, follow-up inspections, evidentiary submissions and applicable legislation governing enforcement and by-law prosecutions.
- Perform administrative duties related to prosecutions including the issuance of case disclosure and notice requirements.
- Conduct resolution meetings with defendants and legal representatives as required.
- Attend Court as required to address guilty pleas, adjournments and trials.
- Assist with prosecutors’ technological requirements, including managing electronic files and scheduling pre-court resolution meetings, electronic or telephone (in person when permitted).
- Receive and review electronic documents including briefs and prepare files for the Prosecutor.
- Using court dockets provided by Court Services, confirm all briefs have been received before each resolution date and court date and follow up with any post-court requirements, schedule appointments, note the file, file the briefs in the next appearance date.
- Assist Prosecutors with break-out rooms during Zoom court appearances.
- Provide backup coverage for the Legal Assistant with administrative duties such as answering phones, covering the wicket, filing as needed.
- Prepare disclosure and assist in the prosecution of recently transferred Provincial Part 3 charges
and for Red Light Camera and Automated Speed Enforcement charges.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications and requirements**
- Must be a licensed member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments in order to meet deadlines in a very demanding environment.
- Superior customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals including other employees, judiciary, legal professionals, enforcement agencies and the general public.
- Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Knowledge of provincial offences law in Ontario (e.g. the Provincial Offences Act, Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, municipal by-laws etc.).
- Knowledge of the processes and legal principles associated with courts in Ontario, and a thorough understanding of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Charter challenges in Provincial Offence cases.
- Ability to carry out critical analysis of case and legal issues and determine appropriate courses of action within legislative, policy, and Rights frameworks on sensitive and confidential issues.
- Fluency in the French language (oral and written) would be an asset.
- A satisfactory Police Record Check is required at time of offer.
**Hours of work**
35 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
**Pay/Salary**
Non-union Grade 3 Rate: $66,626.56-$83,283.20
