Reporting to the Clinical Manager - Indigenous Health, the Mental Health Support Worker works within the Indigenous Health Team to carry out the delivery of culturally competent and safe client-centered care. The Mental Health Support Worker will practice from an Indigenous worldview that recognizes the values, beliefs and customs while working from a holistic lens. It is the role of the Mental Health Support Worker to provide effective and comprehensive assessments and case management for Indigenous People who are living with mental health and substance use.
**Qualifications**:
**Education/Experience**:
- Minimum of a two-year Diploma in Social Services, Mental Health and Addictions or equivalent
- Traditional knowledge acquired through direct experience with Elders and Traditional Healers
**Skills/Abilities**:
- Individual and group counselling skills related to addiction prevention and treatment
- Understand the importance of trauma informed practice through a cultural lens
- Knowledge of Indigenous ceremonies and traditional healing practices
- Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and worldview
- Knowledge of community services and resources, and strong advocacy skills
- Experience utilizing harm reduction principles and strategies
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
- Ability to deliver presentations to a variety of audiences
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Appreciation and respect of others cultural teachings and understanding and, working within a multi-faith setting
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interprofessional team environment
- Competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
**Assets**:
- Ability to speak Ojibwe or Oji-Cree is preferred
**CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT**
Ability to travel to various work locations as required and provide own transportation
This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions. May be required to work flexible hours (extended hours, evening/weekend work).
