**SUMMARY**

The Early Childhood Educator is responsible to support a safe, caring and developmentally appropriate early learning environment for a group of children between the ages of (10) months and five (5) years.

The Early Childhood Educator applies Alexandra Children’s Centre philosophy, programs and policies in order to maintain and enhance a standard of excellence that contributes to a reputation for excellence.

This Job Description provides the Early Childhood Educator with an outline or broad list of duties and responsibilities and provides a general point of reference for evaluation.

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is responsible to report any activity or situation which, in their judgment, is detrimental to the well being of a child or the Centre.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES**

The primary duties and responsibilities for the Early Childhood Educator include but are not limited to the following:
**Child Development and Care**:

- Provide experiences, promoting healthy habits; physical, mental, dental, and nutritional,
- Provide experiences which help in understanding other cultures,
- Encourage and assist children to practice self-help and family life skills,
- Listen to the children and respond with questions and comments,
- Plan and implement a balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, free/structured individual/group, private and solitary activities to facilitate, stimulate, and maximize intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and sensory development
- Have program plan (basic overview of developmental goals) and posted for families, licensing agency and management to review
- Provide experiences that promote the children’s sense of community,
- Plan and facilitate experiences which stimulate each child’s curiosity, inventiveness, and problem-solving skills,
- Actively always supervise children, including during outings and field trips.

**Meet Nutritional Needs**:

- Establish a pleasant, relaxed, family style mealtime environment and routines in a manner consistent with Department of Education, Early Years Branch Nutrition Standards and Centre policy,
- Adhere to the Nutritional Standards as indicated in centre handbook and licensing regulations
- Post all allergies and other special diet conditions in classroom, notifying management of any additions or deletions.

**Behavior Guidance**:

- Set realistic behavior expectations for each child according to their developmental stage,
- Establish with colleagues, an environment which supports positive behavior
- Observe and guide children’s behavior,
- Address challenging behavior immediately and objectively,
- Use and promote active listening skills,
- Implement positive behavior guidance strategies indicated in Centre’s handbook,
- Follow Centre’s behavior management policy and as required by the Daycare Act and Regulations.
- Never to be involved in a situation where self-control is questioned - to ask for assistance immediately.

**Child Welfare**:

- Follow Centre procedure for administering medication and first aid,
- Provide first aid and CPR as required,
- Report and record any accidents, unusual incidents on forms provided by centre as required,
- Report serious incidents immediately to management.
- Record medical procedures and the administration of medication,
- Assist in maintaining the first aid kit; monitor and replenish first aid supplies,
- Check children daily for signs and symptoms of common childhood illnesses,
- Report suspected illness immediately to management,
- Record daily child attendance,
- Follow safe toileting and diapering procedures, attending to a child’s need,
- Report suspected cases of child abuse immediately, following protocol from Reporting and Investigating Allegations of Abuse and Neglect: A Protocol for Staff, N.S Community Services.
- Release children only to authorized people following procedure in centre handbook.

**Equipment and Facilities**:

- Complete and record cleaning and safety checks, as required by licensing and the centre
- Maintain a clean and healthy environment by cleaning tables, chairs, toys, equipment and shelving, sweeping floors, etc.
- Set up and clean up for quiet time (lifting cots and putting out blankets)
- Maintain a safe environment (equipment, materials and furnishings) in the indoor and outdoor play area, as well as on outings with attention to supervision and interaction
- Complete regular safety (head checks) routinely throughout the day,
- Practice fire drill procedures as established by the Centre,
- Maintain a readily accessible list of current phone numbers of parents as well as emergency contacts, notifying management of any additions or deletions.
