**Bench Science Research Coordinator, Surgery**:
**Primary Purpose**: The Bench Science Research Coordinator provides specialized administrative and operational support to researchers in the Department of Surgery, College of Medicine. The position will proficiently assist the Principal Investigators (PIs) and their research team by managing compliance documentation (Animal Use Protocols (AUPs), Biosafety permits, etc.), coordinating research activities, providing purchasing assistance, facilitating onboarding and providing training.
**Accountabilities**:
- Assist with the design and coordination of animal research experiments
- Work extensively with MS office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, OneNote), Photoshop, Endnote, StatsDirect, SMAK, Quasar, ImageJ, etc.
- Work with research tools like RedCap, Datastore, Qreserve, etc.
- Provide training for publication related tasks (like statistical analysis, making publication figures, etc)
- Develops standard operating protocols (SOP’s) for specific procedures within the research programs
- Onboard new lab member on behalf of PIs, and train them on research equipment and lab SOP’s
- Act as the primary point of contact with the university animal ethics office, Safety Resources, and the building lab managers on behalf of the PIs
- Assist with the purchase of lab equipment
- Arrange for (or perform, where applicable) routine maintenance of equipment
- Promote a collaborative and respectful work environment while fostering positive relationships within the department and within the college.
**Qualifications**
**Education**: Minimum of a BSc degree in a Health Sciences related program or related discipline with 5-7 years of experience in animal research or a Master’s Degree with 3-5 years of experience in a health-related field.
**Experience**: Three to five years direct experience working in a biomedical research environment with management/administrative and technical responsibilities is required. Experience in other similar environments may be considered. Laboratory experience with rodent surgeries will be considered an asset.
**Skills**: Highly developed interpersonal, time management and organizational skills with an in depth knowledge of the operations of a research laboratory which includes evidence of skills with a diverse inventory of scientific equipment, excellent health and safety knowledge, development of SOP’s, ordering and inventory procedures, quality control processes, etc., is required. Must possess the ability to calmly and efficiently address technical, interpersonal, and space related difficulties in the labs, with demonstrated leadership, team building, problem solving, and decision making skills. Advanced/specialized technical skills are required to support the development of research protocols and techniques applicable to the PIs they are assigned to. Must have experience with training and mentoring staff in a research setting.
