Science Career and Cooperative Education is partnering with the Faculty of Science Department of Graduate Studies to deliver career programming that is uniquely tailored to the specific needs of Science students at the graduate level. Committed to partnership, we are designing programming in collaboration with students and focused on their unique needs. We approach this challenge from a data-driven perspective informed by core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

A researcher will design and administer a needs analysis of current graduate students to develop an understanding of their career goals, self-assessed skills, and preferred programming mechanisms by which their career and skill objectives can be met. The needs analysis will be supported by user testing prior to execution, including collaboration with staff and groups that support equity-seeking students in order to provide an opportunity for a range of diverse voices. The research coordinator will promote the needs assessment to students to reach a target response rate of 50% of Science graduate students.

Following the data collection phase the research coordinator and the Program Manager, Career Development will collaborate on analyzing the results and developing a strategy for career development programming for the remainder of the academic year. The efficacy of the needs assessment will be assessed, with recommendations to inform the annual implementation of this exercise.

This project will make an immediate impact on the student experience within the current academic year by identifying which resources, workshops, speaker events, etc will deliver the most impact and best align with graduate student goals and interests, with the goal of supporting graduate student career readiness in fulfillment of our SMA3 graduate employability commitment. It is also highly scalable, as we hope to develop SOPs that will be soon be extended to undergraduate science students as well.
