**Professional Academic Advisor**:
**Primary Purpose**: To provide leadership and professional expertise in supporting prospective and current students, College of Nursing faculty and staff, and USask staff in the delivery of the BSN program across the province.
**Nature of Work**: The College of Nursing is the largest non-departmentalized college at the University of Saskatchewan and is the most distributed, with the delivery of the BSN program in ten geographic locations across the province. This position is based at the University of Saskatchewan and can be located either at the Prince Albert or Saskatoon main campuses. The incumbent reports to the Manager, Academic Advising and Support Services.
The Professional Academic Advisor works as part of a provincial advising team, providing leadership to numerous academic advising processes and contributes to service provision across the province.
The Professional Academic Advisor is an expert on matters relating to aspects of clinical nursing experiences and clinical education to influence students’ progress within the program and beyond.
The Professional Academic Advisor is a resource and support for other professional advisors and helps guide the work of the other advisors across the province. The Professional Academic Advisor ensures that duties relating to professional knowledge are conducted by a Professional Advisor. The Professional Academic Advisor must ensure that the provincial advising team is knowledgeable of the resources available to students across the province and is skilled at assessing, identifying and referring students at risk and/or in need of additional resources,
This position is expected to work with USask staff and departments on matters relating to the operationalization of the BSN program and on strategic initiatives relating to student recruitment, admission, retention, and progress in the program.
The position is expected to demonstrate exceptional communication skills in a variety of modalities (written, verbal, non-verbal, virtual). It is driven by constant deadlines; continuous change and shifting priorities. The standard for the quality of work and timely completion of tasks is high. Some travel is required.
**Typical Duties or Accountabilities**:
- Plays a key role in the development, interpretation, maintenance and communication of BSN program requirements, academic regulations, graduation standards, academic policies, and degree requirements within the College.
- Ensures that advising practices encourage and empower students to assume responsibility for their education.
- Provides professional academic advising services primarily to BSN students around the province.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with the Teaching, Learning and Student Experience (TLSE) units.
- Provides knowledge and expertise to support faculty with issues related to student needs including academic appeals, accommodating disabilities, supporting the development of learning contracts, and assisting with the assessment of transfer credits.
- Provides expertise and knowledge to committees as required
- Provides knowledge and expertise to contribute to the development of BSN program policies and procedures.
- Responsible for monitoring students’ overall academic progress
- Responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the recruitment and retention of students.
**Education**:Minimum of registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Master’s degree in nursing is preferred
**Experience**: At least five years of directly related experience in a post-secondary or equivalently complex environment is required.
