SALCBC is an intersectional feminist organization advocating for access to justice and equity for South Asians in British Columbia. At SALCBC we strive to be the first point of contact for those in the South Asian community facing access to justice issues. We serve the South Asian community by offering low-barrier, multilingual and culturally sensitive legal information, education, advice and advocacy. We are looking for a full-time family lawyer to join our legal team.
- One - three years of experience in Employment Law, Human Rights, Immigration, tenancy or family law.
- Experience handling matters in in BC Supreme Court, Provincial Court and tribunals.
- Experience representing clients in alternative dispute processes.
- Strong knowledge of the BSCS and Provincial Court Rules of Court
- Practices with attention to detail, has excellent communication skills and is able to work in a fast-paced changing work environment.
- Must work in collaboration with other co-workers and community partners.
- Excellent research, writing and communication skills.
- Experience working with low-income communities.
- Experience working with diverse members of the South Asian community.
- Demonstrated knowledge of social justice and systemic barriers to the South Asian community/ Understanding of issues of significance to the low-income South Asian community.
- Must be a self-starter and motivated to work hard to help clients in all aspects of their needs, above all.
- The lawyer will work under the supervision of the Managing Lawyer to provide legal information and advocacy on the lawyer’s area of expertise.
- The lawyer will be required to provide community legal education and create legal resources as needed.
- **Qualifications**_**:
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of BC
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of equity, intersectionality, anti-racism and decolonization and anti-oppression work.
- Demonstrate analysis, knowledge and training of working in a culturally and trauma informed manner.
- Ability to speak a South Asian language: Punjabi, Hindi or Urdu.
- Will be required to travel. Must have reliable transportation.
- May be required to work flexible hours, including evening and weekends.
