The Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient unit provides care for children and youth up to the age of 18 who are experiencing crisis due to urgent mental health difficulties that may result in self-harm or pose a risk to others. This program serves children and adolescents requiring admission for assessment and short-term stabilization of urgent mental health problems. During admission, coordination with community resources is completed for follow up treatment. The Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient unit consists of Regulated Health Care Professionals including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Nursing Staff. As well as Social Workers, Child and Youth Workers, Recreational Therapists, and Patients Representatives.

The Social Worker participates as an integral member of the multidisciplinary health care team in the provision of patient care. As the Social Worker, the purpose or your role is to provide comprehensive psychosocial assessments and interventions to individuals and their families.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Discharge planning for all patients
- Provide psycho-social assessments
- Advocacy for services
- Provide service navigation to youth and families
- Assist with deescalating youth on the unit
- Support families with safety planning and education on mental health challenges the youth faces
- Secure resources in the community (when possible)
- Provide emotional support as needed to both youth and family members
- Collaborate with child welfare services as needed
- Facilitate family meetings
- Facilitate discharge meetings
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team and external services
- Provide education to other members of the team in terms of social worker interventions that benefit patients and families
- Providing coverage for the Social Worker in the Outpatient Program and The Day Program.
- Masters of Social Work degree from an accredited School of Social Work
- Registration with Ontario College of Certified Social Workers/Social Services Workers mandatory
- Minimum of two years of progressive clinical experience in a health care setting
- Sounds knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act
- Understanding of the DSM IV
- Risk Assessment experience
- Computer proficiency
- Strong written and oral communication skills
