Reporting to the Executive Director, the Recreation Manager is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating a range of therapeutic and leisure programs that promote the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of residents at Villa Cathay Care Home. This role provides leadership to Recreation Assistants and volunteers, ensures programs are person-centered and aligned with care plans, and contributes to enhancing residents' quality of life.
**What you’ll do**
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Recreation Leader supports the design and delivery of adult recreational programs at VCCH. This role involves planning and leading activities, promoting participation, guiding residents and families, and supervising program staff and volunteers. As part of the interdisciplinary care team, the Recreation Leader ensures programs align with professional standards, safety protocols, and resident-centered care.
**Key duties and responsibilities**
- Design, implement, and evaluate diverse recreation and therapeutic programs (e.g., music, crafts, exercise, sensory activities) tailored to resident needs and interests.
- Develop and maintain program goals that support meaningful engagement and wellness.
- Assess resident needs through care plan reviews, interviews, and consultation with families and interdisciplinary teams; document individualized recreation plans.
- Supervise Recreation Assistants and volunteers, including scheduling, task coordination, orientation, and performance feedback.
- Coordinate monthly activity calendars and facilitate group and one-on-one sessions; collaborate with external providers for guest programs and materials.
- Track resident participation, monitor changes in well-being, and report observations to the care team; participate in care conferences.
- Manage program inventory and supplies, support budget planning and monitor expenditures.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers in partnership with facility or volunteer services.
- Responsible for following policies and procedures related to resident safety within their scope of practice and ensuring safe and satisfactory outcomes for residents.
- Participate in safety education and training, understand emergency and disaster management plans, and actively take part in Villa Cathay Care Home’s drills and exercises.
- Perform other related duties as required.
**What you bring**
**Education, Training and Experience**
- Graduation from a recognized recreational program plus three years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Diploma or degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation & Leisure Studies, Gerontology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in recreation programming, preferably in healthcare, long-term care, or seniors’ services.
- Certification with a recognized professional association (e.g., BCRPA, NCTRC) is an asset.
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
- Sound understanding of therapeutic recreation, aging, and person-centered care.
**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes**
- Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Criminal Record Check and compliance with immunization and TB screening requirements.
- Physically able to perform job duties; capable of using related equipment effectively.
Pay: $40.00-$50.00 per hour
