**Job Summary**
Reporting to the Track Supervisor, the Railway Protection Advisor is responsible for monitoring and controlling railway construction and maintenance activities to ensure safe practice for work occurring on or near rail infrastructure. The Railway Protection Advisor primary role is to set up a safe system of work to protect rail operations from engineering and asset management activities, and provide rail corridor access and control. The Railway Protection Advisor ensures compliance with the requirements of the Railway Safety Act, Operating Rules, Safety Instructions, Engineering Track Standards, and PNR company policies and procedures.
**Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties**
- Ensures compliance to railway safety requirements and instructions
- Provides instructions to ensure that all workers understand site specific requirements prior to commencing work
- Consults with the site Supervisor and/or contractor’s representative to understand scope of work being conducted, any potential hazards to the rail infrastructure and applies field level controls or protection as required to protect rail operations.
- Communicates diligently with the work group being protected, other railway personnel and Rail Traffic Controllers using established procedures and radio equipment to ensure the understanding of instructions, protection limits, work site hazards and other specific site conditions
- Applies knowledge of the requirements of the rules and regulations to support the safe and on-time movement of heavy rail commuter trains through work zones with mínimal delay to project performance
- Provides on-site track protection according to the Canadian Rail Operating Rules
- Responsibly operates company vehicles and ensures all daily maintenance and inspections of the units are completed
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Track Supervisor
- Performs any administrative duties related to proper documentation as per PNR Quality Management System
- May be required to assist with railway maintenance and construction
**Qualifications**:
- Post Secondary Diploma Required
- Prefer field experience in civil infrastructure construction or maintenance
- Ability to read and understand specific documents including schedules, standard railway plans and specifications.
- Ability to work in a safety sensitive position to protect the public and infrastructure
- Ability to communicate clear verbal and written instructions
- Proficient use of computers, tablets etc.
- Valid Ontario class G driver’s license
**Physical Requirements**:
- Works outdoors and able to be exposed to all weather conditions including extreme hot and cold temperatures
- Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends on uneven terrain
- Exposed to loud noise.
- Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
- Ability to work rotating shifts
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
