Custodial Lead Hand

**Position Summary**:
Under the direction of the Custodial Program Manager, the Custodial Lead hand oversees a team of custodial workers engaged in cleaning activities in buildings, facilities, offices and surrounding areas at various sites. The essential functions of the job include overseeing activities of custodial staff; and participates in developing, updating and evaluating work and/or safety standards, policies and procedures. The Lead hand will also be responsible for cleaning activities, as well as training staff on proper procedures and efficient processes.
The Lead hand may assist in the facility maintenance plan, assignment of work schedules, evaluate subordinates' performance, coordinate, plan, and supervise custodial operations for special events. The Lead hand will make regular field checks of assigned buildings to ensure completion of work assignments, inventory maintenance, and distribution of janitorial supplies and equipment. The Lead hand will immediately report any concerns regarding staff attendance, performance or behavior to the Custodial Program Manager for follow up.

**Qualifications/Requirements**:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Certificate in Building Service Workers (BSW).
- Completion of a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems course.
- 1 year experience in overseeing the work of others, or direct supervision of others.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment.
- Physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to safely use cleaning and maintenance equipment.
- Must be flexible and able to work varied shifts from early morning, late afternoon, evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Must be punctual, trustworthy and able to work independently to complete assigned tasks
- Ability to train new staff or existing staff on efficient and proper procedures.
- Adapt in team building, decision making and problem solving skills.
- Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
- Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
- Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
**Primary Responsibilities**:
- Oversees and coordinates work activities for assigned custodial staff members. Provides staff motivation and a pleasant work environment.
- Provides relief coverage in planned or emergent absences of other supervisors and employees as needed or requested. Must adjust work assignments for staff as needed to ensure coverage in assigned areas.
- Prepares and evaluates time records.
- Completes initial and ongoing training of employees. Explains and ensures that the staff are trained and understand the proper handling of cleaning chemicals as per WHMIS Standards; Infection Prevention and Control Standards; Health Standards and all safety policies and procedures as outlined by the department.
- Conducts walk-through of assigned areas to review work content for quality and productivity. Conducts inspections and prepares inspection reports with key personnel following department quality audit guidelines. Reports any specific deficiencies that impact operations and safety to the Custodial Program Manager within a timely manner.
- Maintains records and prepares reports on a regular basis, which pertain to equipment, cleaning procedures, etc. Inspects housekeeping carts and closets to ensure they are clean and in compliance with safety standards.
- Uses cleaning chemicals safely and efficiently in accordance with established procedures.
- Raise requisitions to maintain inventory of janitorial supplies, materials and equipment; maintains records of usage manually or by using automated systems.
- Coordinates the operation and care of custodial tools and equipment; distributes and collects keys and equipment.
- Drives motor vehicle to reach various job sites in order to facilitate custodial operations.
- May assist planning, organizing, scheduling, and overseeing custodial operations to prepare for special events.
