**ABOUT THE ROLE**

Reporting to the Manager - Clinical Innovation, the Clinical Scholar is an experienced, frontline nurse who is employed in a supernumerary position to provide formalized mentorship and support for new nurses transitioning into the workforce. New nurses as part of the Clinical Scholar Program include: newly graduated nurses, Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and nurses seeking to upskill. The Clinical Scholar is responsible for successful implementation of the Clinical Scholar program by providing clinical/professional leadership to facilitate a supportive, safe and effective work environment for new nurses. The Clinical Scholar shares their knowledge, experience, and expertise and acts as a mentor and a role model supporting and encouraging the professional development of new nurses and providing active coaching to help them achieve their goals. The Clinical Scholar offers a fresh perspective and an independent point of view, while guiding a process that fosters the educational development and point of care leadership capabilities of the new nurses.

**WHAT YOU BRING**

Education/Experience:

- A Nursing degree from a recognized and accredited university/college
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum of five years of experience in a hospital clinical setting
- Familiar with CNO Entry to Practice Competencies and Professional Nursing Standards
- Membership in a professional organization - (RNAO, WeRPN, CNA)
- Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring
- Demonstrated leadership competencies to provide mentorship to nurses

Skills/Abilities:

- Excellent clinical and assessment skills
- Committed to excellence with demonstrated clinical competence, leadership qualities and decision making skills
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
- Knowledge of adult education principles and demonstrated coaching abilities
- Demonstrate critical thinking in the nursing process while collecting and interpreting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of nursing care
- Excellent skills in problem-solving, time management and verbal and written communication
- Demonstrated commitment to the importance of the mentoring relationship and a willingness to treat it as a priority
- Demonstrated commitment to regular communications and interactions
- Ability to respect the confidential nature of all information obtained during the mentorship experience
- Willingness to participate in the evaluation process, as requested
- Committed to positivity and encouragement throughout the mentorship process
- Knowledge of practice standards and guiding principles to foster evidence based practices, professional practice and accountability
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills in order to monitor and address the needs of staff
- Fosters an environment of cultural safety and humility, and is committed to an anti-oppressive culture
- Demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate, client and family centred care
- Demonstrate regular attendance record is required

Assets:

- Completion of LEADS the Way Lite, RNAO Best Practice Champion Certification and Preceptor Education an asset

Conditions of Employment:

- Must maintain membership in Professional College in good standing
- This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory **Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)**where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
