The Sustainability Coordinator supports Canadore College’s sustainability goals, particularly its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2031. The incumbent will advance sustainability initiatives, focusing on decarbonization and waste reduction, and provide operational support for projects like grow pods and clean water systems. Additionally, the incumbent will research new strategies, monitor progress, and collaborate with various teams to meet the college’s environmental objectives.

**Qualifications**:

- A two-year diploma or degree in an environmental-related field, with experience in research or sustainability projects
- Experience in hydroponic growing technologies and water treatment systems is an asset
- Required Certifications:

- Training in vertical hydroponic facility operations
- Entry-Level Drinking Water Operator and Operator-in-Training certifications
- Experience using water treatment technologies
- Extensive experience developing and implementing sustainability and carbon mitigation initiatives within a post-secondary education setting
- Experience calculating greenhouse gas emission offsets
- Experience managing or operating a hydroponic food production system
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multitask and shift priorities as needed
- Experience developing and coordinating community-focused sustainability projects

**Responsibilities**:Grow Pods & Clean Water Demonstration Site**:

- Oversee the daily operations of the grow pods, including planting, trimming, cleaning, and preparing produce for sale
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintain data records, and monitor plant health and equipment efficiency
- Assist in maintaining and operating the clean water demonstration site, ensuring alignment with the Clean Water Initiative’s goals
- Monitor system functionality and water quality, ensuring the site serves as an effective educational and operational resource

**Waste Reduction & Decarbonization**:

- Coordinate waste management initiatives, including audits to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement
- Track and calculate carbon offsets from sustainability initiatives such as Lomi, TerraCycle, and the HARP biodigester, ensuring accurate reporting
- Research and implement new waste reduction strategies, particularly in organic diversion
- Support the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) audit through Ecometrica and collaborate with finance and stakeholders to establish a process for tracking business travel emissions

**Forest Management**:

- Support the implementation of Canadore College’s 10-year forest management plan, ensuring compliance with FSC and SFI certifications
- Conduct Species at Risk (SAR) monitoring and implement sustainable forestry practices.
- Promote environmental stewardship through active forest maintenance and biodiversity conservation

**Staff Engagement & Community Collaboration**:

- Collaborate with community partners such as Clean, Green, Beautiful, the City of North Bay, and the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority
- Promote sustainability across the college and in the broader community, aligning efforts with the SDG Accord and global sustainability goals
