Waste Management Supervisor

**Purpose**:
Facilities Services comprises a team of professionals who are committed to deliver support services that strive to enhance the quality of campus life for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Reporting to the Manager, Grounds, Fleet and Waste Management, the Waste Management Supervisor is responsible for the initiation, promotion and implementation of York University's waste management and sustainability objectives, consistent with the University's approved Waste Management and Reduction Policy. The Waste Management Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all related waste management sustainability initiatives are coordinated and maintained at both the Keele and Glendon campuses. This includes the disposal of approximately 2000 metric tons of garbage and the diversion of approximately 2200 metric tons of recyclables. In addition, this position is responsible for the active field supervision of the Grounds unit unionized staff.
**Education**:
Minimum of completion of a College Diploma with some courses in environmental studies/sustainability or related area. Ontario Class 'G' driver's licence in good standing (including a clean driving record) required. DZ License preferred.
**Experience**:
Minimum of four (4) years recent directly related experience in the waste management field, inclusive of three (3) years' experience developing and implementing programs, preferably in the area of waste management and sustainability. Two (2) years' Supervisory experience in a unionized environment required. Demonstrated experience in developing and presenting information/training sessions.
**Skills**:
Demonstrated skills and ability in the following:
Current knowledge of waste reduction and recycling techniques and issues concerning waste management.
Current working knowledge of the city of Toronto Municipal Act.
Current working knowledge of By-Law No. 746-2004 (Municipal Act).
Current working knowledge of Ontario Regulation No. 102/94 (Ministry of Environment).
Current working knowledge of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act (Federal).
Current working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Ministry of Labour).
Effective oral and written communication skills to respond to inquiries and to explain and gather information in a clear and accurate manner.
Ability to work independently and set and meet priorities.
Ability to prepare and deliver presentations, provide one-on-one sessions or group training.
Ability to collaborate and interact with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in a courteous, discretionary and effective manner.
Research, data collection and analytical skills to identify patterns, trends and to identify opportunities and make recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to performance manage, coach and delegate work to staff.
Respects diversity and promotes inclusion in the workplace, contributes to an inclusive and diverse team-based, positive work environment.
Recognizes diversity of abilities and adapts content, tone, medium, and style to audience to be inclusive.
Committed to continuous learning and skill building in diversity, inclusive and cultural competence.
Demonstrated computer skills in the following:
Intermediate MS Word, MS Excel & PowerPoint.
Basic database (MS Access).
E-mail (MS Outlook).
Database systems/asset tracking programs such as Maximo.

- **Compensation**:
York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
