ROLE
The Activity Aide plays an important role in the Care partnership by promotion of a compassionate physical and psychosocial environment for the residents. You are a leader; advocate and role model to others in relationship-building, helping people become well-known within the care unit and in the community, and are decision makers in their lives. Your role within your unit is to bring your expertise to ensure that the rhythm of daily life meets the needs of all care team members. You are a liaison that connects the diverse skill sets of those within and outside your care unit to meet the resident’s needs. You are a leader in the planning and delivery of a wide range of activities aimed at meeting the individual goals of each resident. Your passion for recognizing and eliminating loneliness, helplessness and boredom will be an example to others.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Developing relationships with residents, and supporting relationship between residents and other team members, to help them become well known in the Lodge and connected to activities of interest
- Using knowledge of residents’ goals to engage them in activities that bring purpose, meaning and enjoyment.
- Participating in organizing and planning a natural daily rhythm that promotes the residents physical, mental, social, spiritual and intellectual well-being;

- Understanding the domains of well-being and working to bring them to life daily;
- Ensuring that individuals have meaningful opportunities for ‘being’ and ‘doing’, as it fits their desires and lifestyle choices
- Collaborating with the other neighbourhoods to help people connect and socialize with others;
- Coordinating needed supplies and resources are available to meet the rhythm of daily life as defined by those living and working in your neighbourhood.
- Collaborating with other care units and team on special events;
- Ensuring that people from the larger community are welcome, find meaningful ways to be involved and contribute to daily life. Directly supervise youth and special event/outing volunteers.
- Carrying out resident/client outings and operates the GVL vehicle by:
Preparing program list, cautions, materials, residents and vehicle for outing. Communicating outing information to team members, residents, program clients, volunteers and guests, as required. Accompanying residents on outings, and follows vehicle operation and driver procedures such as pretrip inspection, minor maintenance of the vehicle such as cleaning and adding fluids, and loading/unloading procedures.
- Assisting with activities of daily living by supporting residents at mealtimes and refreshment breaks, mobility, and toileting
- Safekeeping of program equipment, supplies and spaces, orders supplies, and notifies supervisor of malfunctioning equipment
- Assisting with care of facility pets
Performing other related duties
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training and Experience**:
- Completion of Grade 12
- Successful completion of an Activation Assistant Program or Recreation diploma program.
- Valid B.C. Class 4 Driver's License and Basic First Aid certificate. (Not required in Adult Day Program, Special Care Unit or Rose Garden)
- Food Safe Level 1
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to implement programs and daily activities to achieve resident-centered goals
- Ability to evaluate success of interactions
- Familiarity with and ability to access services and resources in the larger community that can be of benefit to those living in your neighbourhood
- An understanding of how to engage those living with dementia, mental health issues, alcohol/drug addiction, post-traumatic injuries and physical disabilities
- Familiarity with the domains of well-being and is willing to work across the community to bring them to life daily
- A high level of comfort when educating others in how to engage in strong, caring relationships on an individual basis and in small and large social events
- A high level of comfort when working with individuals and leading small and large social events
- Ability to organize and facilitate planning and organization for your care unit
