The Opportunity

Do you enjoy working in a team environment providing the public and user groups with a clean and safe area in which to participate in recreational activities? If so, then this could be the role for you The Operator 1, Recreation will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of buildings and facilities, including pool operations, arenas, sports fields, repairs, snow removal, and the operation of equipment.
**Responsibilities**:
- Operate of a variety of equipment including but not limited to, city vehicles, tractors, ice-surfacers, small loaders, skid steer and small power tools.
- Perform daily building and equipment maintenance and small repairs for the aquatic center, sports fields, community center, parking lots and driveways in both an aesthetic and safe manner for the public.
- Perform ice making and ice maintenance operations.
- Perform ball diamond and sports field maintenance duties (field line painting, floating diamonds, bleacher repair etc.).
- Perform inspections and complete regular maintenance/repairs on playgrounds.
- Perform basic maintenance or upkeep on all tools and equipment daily to ensure optimal performance.
- Keep detailed accurate records and maintenance logs daily and weekly in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service with the ability to create a positive experience for all customers; ability to liaise with the public and user groups in a professional manner.
- Perform janitorial duties (as required).
- Work assignments will depend on the season and will vary.
Education, Qualifications and Work Experience
- High School Diploma or GED. Post secondary education and or training in equipment operation is an asset.
- Previous experience in building, pool, and/or arena experience. Previous municipal experience is considered an asset.
- Arena Operator Level 1
- Parks & Sports Fields Level 1
- Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification
- Building Maintenance Level 1
- Swimming Pool Operator Level 1
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities.
- Standard First Aid and CPR, or willingness to acquire at own cost within 6 months of employment.
- Confined Space Certification is an asset.
- WHIMIS is an asset.
- Possess and retain a valid class 5 driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery.
- Ability to display mature judgment and self-confidence to deal with emergency situations.
- Possess effective communication and interpersonal skills, to work with internal departments, contractors, community members, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of tools, with the ability to use technology.
- Strong decision-making skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities.
- High level of initiative and independent judgement and ability to work as a key team member with mínimal supervision.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the desire to contribute to a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety standards under OH&S and by compliance with all safe work practices, policies, directives, and procedures.
- Meet physical requirements, lifting and unloading of heavy goods and equipment up to 50lbs, standing and sitting for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, twisting etc., and working in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work at varied heights, from ladders, and scaffolding boom trucks.
- Ability to provide a clear criminal record check.
- Ability to provide a 5-year driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour.
- Must have the flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Shifts will include early morning and late evenings.
