The Covanta Environmental Solutions (CES) Internship program allows talented individuals to join the Covanta team and gain knowledge and experience about the Energy from Waste (EfW) industry and the processing of Non-Hazardous Waste streams. These projects and assignments will be created specifically for the participating business units of this program. Coupled with the student’s classroom experience, this program will help round out the individuals in their area of studies. In this program, students will have the opportunity to:

- Work side by side with Covanta professionals
- Gain an understanding of the Energy from Waste industry
- Receive valuable training
- Understand the value of safety in a plant environment

We are looking for a Process Engineer/Scientist intern who wants experience in liquid material processing and waste management solutions. In partnership with the department leads, you will identify, develop and drive improvement projects.

Your primary function would include the following activities:

- Analyze the waste management process to find improvement opportunities;
- Collect and analyze data: identify trends, escalate undesirable conditions;
- Perform process analysis to gain more insight in order to make strategic recommendations;
- Draft and present suggestions for process optimization;
- Participate in the implementation of chosen improvement opportunities;
- Perform laboratory tests to produce reliable data for analysis
- Document processes for test instruments and processes in the lab
- Perform risk and safety analysis and suggest improvements;
- Improve and amend written procedures;
- Present periodically data and analysis results to plant leadership team
- Provide engineering support for the waste management processes
- Assist the production staff;
- Work in teams to resolve process issues;
- Participate in efforts to select, acquire and qualify new equipment;
- Communicate your findings through reports, presentations and team discussions;
- Measure the progress of projects against plans;
- Report and document issues related to processes or equipment failures.
- Establish and maintain a clean, orderly and safe work environment;
- Perform other related duties, as required.
- Currently enrolled in a University Internship program completing a 4-year program in Civil or Chemical or Environmental Engineering or Earth and environmental sciences.
- Competent with computer software
- Analytical and planning skills coupled with the ability to multi-task
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
- Detail-oriented and creative problem-solving approach
- Strong team player; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to collect, correlate, analyze and report on data from a variety of sources in a timely manner - Performance Metrics
- Support diagnostic, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving aptitude
- Fast learner with acute drive for issue resolution / closure
- Must have an analytical and scientific background;
- Must be autonomous;
- Ability to troubleshoot the equipment
- Some physical effort required to lift up to 40lbs;
- Must be rigorous and detail oriented;
- Strong English writing skills;
- Team player;
- Able to work 40 hours per week over the summer
- MS Office skills, expertise with Excel and Power Point
