Thunder Bay, Canada Nokiiwin Tribal Council Full time

Nokiiwin is looking for a Staff Lawyer who will be required to provide legal services in both criminal and family matters. The Staff Lawyer is under the direction and supervision of the Access to Justice Manager and will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working in collaboration to achieve access to justice service and advocacy for members of the community.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Provide summary legal advice and legal services to members of the five Nokiiwin First Nations.
- Attend criminal, family and child protection courts and act as Duty Counsel when requested.
- Development and delivery of public legal education and hosting clinics in each of the member First Nations.
- Liaise with justice personnel to ensure partnership building and advocacy for Nokiiwin members.
- Training and management of Community Legal Workers.
- Travel to Nokiiwin member First Nations.

**Qualifications**:

- Post-graduate university degree in law (JD) and a member in good standing with the Ontario Law Society of Ontario.
- Knowledge and experience of relevant criminal and family legislations.

Knowledge of the _Child and Youth Family Services Act_ as it pertains to First Nations.
- Knowledge of Wills and Estates law will be an asset.
- Must have sound judgment, superior negotiation and organizational skills, and the proven ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Anishinaabek culture and heritage.
- Must have a valid driver license and access to a vehicle as travel is required between First Nations and satellite courts.
- Fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
- Successful completion of a Level 3 - Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
