**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**

Under the authority and supervision of the Senior Director, Apprenticeship Program, the Communications Officer (CO) will support, implement and monitor communications activities under the Communications Task Group (the Task Group). The CO will work in close coordination with the other members of the Task Group as well as members of the Research, Analysis, and Drafting Task Group to implement a communications strategy. The communications work will support the project’s objective of arranging 2,000 first year, Red Seal apprenticeships annually.

**SCOPE**

The CO will be responsible for planning, developing, and promoting a variety of communications on using a variety of media, including website content, blogs, social media posts, and online video and audio promotions.

The CO, working in close coordination with the other members of the Task Group, will ensure that the various communications tasks under the project are completed to highly professional standards, on time and on budget, and using culturally appropriate and gender-based lenses that respect First Nation, Métis, Inuit Women and Girls and Indigenous members of the 2SLGBTQQIA communities.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Support the development of a communications strategy for the project.
- Develop and distribute communications materials under the communications strategy, including social media posters, promotional videos, and radio/podcast advertisements.
- Support the development and management of the project website/portal, including preparing landing page content, terms of use and privacy agreements, and monthly blogs.
- Develop and promote online training resources and on-demand webinars.
- Respond to media inquiries and arrange interviews.
- Identify opportunities to promote awareness of the project and to encourage engagement with the projects website/portal.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- University degree in the area of communications, journalism, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with NGOs, organizations, interest groups and government, agencies or business/corporate entities in a communications role.
- Experience using social media, website editing, desktop publishing software, online video recording and editing, and podcasting.
- Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset; and,
- Relevant experience working or volunteering with Not-for-Profit organizations or corporations is an asset.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

**Knowledge**

The employee must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

- Social media technology and techniques for promoting online content;
- Videography technology and techniques especially related to online videos;
- Planning, recording, editing and promoting podcasts/ online audio advertisements;
- Graphic design and presentation software (PowerPoint);
- SEO and Google Analytics;
- Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;
- Indigenous issues, norms and standards relevant to promotion and protection of Indigenous women’s rights;
- Issues impacting Indigenous women and girls in Canada and internationally;
**Skills**

The employee must demonstrate the following skills:

- Excellent skills generating and distributing online content to generate significant social media engagements;
- Ability to develop and deliver creative content (text, image, video, and audio);
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills in English (fluency in French is a strong asset);
- Strong networking, relationship-building and public speaking skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure;
- Ability to design, develop and implement communications initiatives using a variety of tools and platforms.
