As an integral part of the HPEPH team, Health Promoters plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive health promotion strategies, provide specialised analysis and advice in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards, conduct work in accordance with Pan Canadian Health Promoter Competencies (Health Promotion Canada (Ontario), the Jakarta Declaration, the Health Protection and Promotion Act, organizational policies and any other applicable guidelines and legislation.
The Health Promoter will work with the Healthy Schools team to advance initiatives related to the health and well-being of children and youth within Hastings and Prince Edward Counties with a initial assignment of parent engagement and communications lead plus school assignments.
**Responsibilities Include**:
- Works as a team to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive health promotion programs using a variety of strategies which include a) building healthy public policy, b) creating supportive environments, c) strengthening community action, d) developing personal skills, e) reorienting health services to improve health and well-being of children and youth.
- Assesses, analyzes and applies surveillance information related to topics relevant to health and well-being of children and youth to determine need, including identification of health inequities and priority populations.
- Uses a variety of assessment methods and reviews evidence to plan, act, and evaluate public health interventions.
- Identifies appropriate course of action and makes recommendations based on in-depth analysis and understanding of underlying issues.
- Initiates, develops, and fosters relationships with key partners, including but not limited to, boards of education, school administrators, educators, families, students, non-profit organizations, and others, as required, to collaboratively engage in health promotion initiatives.
- Attend school council meetings, school staff meetings, school committees including student leadership groups, and school events, in order to engage the school community, provide expert advice and promote priority health topics.
- Utilises various strategies to build and strengthen participation and improve capacity for action around shared health priorities.
- Supports delivery of the Healthy Schools program including assessment, documentation, program delivery and support for development of healthy public policies and other upstream interventions with a variety of partners.
- Supports planning and delivery of health equity initiatives.
- Increases knowledge, raises awareness, and influences public opinion on health issues of public health importance.
- Works both independently and with internal and external teams/committees to plan timelines and meet deliverables of multiple projects and prioritize work accordingly.
- Works with Healthy Communities team to support communication and engagement with local communities and health care providers as part of the socio-ecological model for Healthy Schools program.
- Supports educators and school success teams with implementation of health-related curricula and other programs to address health needs for priority topics.
- Adapts program and services to various formats including using online tools and virtual formats.
- Provides feedback and engages in evaluation activities to evaluate the Healthy School program.
- Engages in educating, training, facilitating access, interpreting, and communicating infectious diseases information to students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.
- Supports childcare centres, home childcare premises and other priority settings for health promotion as needed.
- Maintains documentation (electronic and physical) for programs, services, and client interactions, in compliance with legislation, professional standards, and agency policy.
- May support municipal partners and community-based groups to improve health and well-being of residents in HPE.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
