Research Laboratory Coordinator

Under the supervision of the Manager, Research Services, with oversight from the Assistant Dean, Research, the Research Lab Coordinator ensures the efficient, safe, orderly and equitable coordination of the NOSM University’s research laboratories located at our Sudbury campus. On a day-to-day basis, this position assists with the maintenance, compliance and overall proper running of the state-of-the-art biomedical research laboratory, as well as coordinating the use of the dry laboratory.
This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.
**Responsibilities**:
Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Maintains administrative workflow by following processes, coordinating tasks within the process and continuing the workflow to completion.
- Resolves administrative problems by analyzing information; identifying and communicating solutions to stakeholders.
- Maintains rapport with users, managers, and employees by arranging continuing contacts; researching and developing new services and methods; setting priorities; resolving problem situations.
- Stores and updates Unit databases with relevant information.
- Provides information by answering questions and requests to stakeholders.
- Maintains continuity of work operations by documenting and communicating needed actions to management; discovering irregularities; determining continuing needs.
- Accomplishes department and organization mission by creating reports and communicating results back to stakeholders.
- Assists the Assistant Dean and other research faculty in the planning of technical growth of the research laboratory. Communicates with vendors to secure quotes, procures and coordinates the installation of a variety of laboratory equipment required to furnish the state-of-the-art biomedical research facilities. Orders and maintains an up-to-date inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment, including research supplies.
- Assists with the development of the laboratory’s annual budget, including but not limited to capital purchases related to replacement or new equipment and upon approval, administers the approved laboratory operating budget.
- Liaises with the Research faculty to maintain an-up-to-date knowledge of biomedical research practices, techniques and equipment by reviewing current scientific, technical, professional and trade articles and publications, as well as conference attendance to keep apprised of the current practices.
- Assists with the development of lab policies and procedures related to the proper use and maintenance of the laboratory and research equipment and communicates these policies and procedures to stakeholders.
- Coordinates the storage, usage and disposal of biohazardous, chemical and radioactive wastes, as required within the positions’ scope of authority.
- Coordinates scheduling and usage of the laboratory work areas and equipment.
- Ensures that laboratory equipment is maintained in good working order by monitoring the state of equipment, performing or arranging for preventive maintenance and/or repairs as necessary. Keeps an inventory of equipment, repairs and service contracts.
- Coordinates the maintenance of the laboratory facilities which includes the establishment of maintenance requirements of research laboratory facilities and equipment and assists with vendor negotiations.
- Monitors compliance with institutional safety policies within laboratory setting and reports any discrepancies to the Manager of Facilities Services or designate. Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other health and safety related legislation and standards.
- Trains and provides technical support to students, laboratory staff and faculty relating to the use of laboratory equipment.
- Conducts public tours of the research laboratory upon request.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- A Master’s degree in a related discipline (biology, chemistry or other related health science discipline) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Biosafety Level II Training Certification
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in an academic biomedical research laboratory environment is required.
- Proven experience in coordinating various tasks under tight deadlines
- An understanding of Indigenous and French communities and their needs as it relates to medical education
- The ability to communicate effectively and to express oneself clearly verbally, and in writing, and uses a variety of media
