**CO-OP STUDENT - ECOTOXICOLOGY**

**4 Month Term - Fall Semester**

**Basic Purpose**:Performs routine toxicity analyses.

**Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities**:

- Prepare samples for analysis
- Keep detailed records as required
- Dispose of waste and general laboratory clean-up as needed
- Monitor and maintain adequate supplies
- All other responsibilities as assigned

**Under the guidance of Biologist**:
**General**
- Complies and works in accordance with the Quality System and Health and Safety policies.
- Meets quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
- Employs proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials

**Specifics**
- Performs routine toxicity analyses in strict compliance to the requirements of the Standard Operating Procedures
- Responsible to maintain cultures of bioassay organisms such as, rainbow trout, Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and various algae
- Keeps accurate records of all work, i.e., calibration and maintenance of instruments, water quality measurements, culture mortality and reproduction and test results
- Writes and proofs reports on completed ecotoxicity projects
- Participates in external & internal method audits and maintains a high level of theoretical & practical expertise
- Assists in the development, conduct, and validation of toxicity methods for projects involving environmental and industrial projects
- Other duties as assigned

**Skills and Know-how**:

- Lab experience is an asset but not required
- Must be currently enrolled in a Chemistry/Biotechnology or other Science related post-grad College/University program
- A positive can-do attitude and proven ability to take initiative
- Solid problem solving skills, effective communication skills, analytical mindset, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- The job incumbent must be available for shift work, working on weekends and overtime

**Work Relationship**:
Internal: This position involves daily contact with coworkers to exchange information, and with their supervisor for scheduling, instructions and training.

**Working Conditions**:

- Students may be expected to perform repetitive somewhat physical work using a variety of machines and equipment as required and according to deadlines established by more experienced analysts & their supervisor
- The job requires flexible working hours and overtime
- May involve long periods of standing
- Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate equipment
- Fast paced environment
