**Salary**: $3,076.28 to $4,053.05 bi-weekly ($80,290.90 - $105,784.60/year)
**Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division (TIFS) **The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bio-product manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.
**Food & Bio-Processing Branch (FBPB) **provides scientific and technical expertise, business development services and specialized facilities to support product/process development, scale up and commercialization of food and non-food products for companies serving local, national and global markets.
**Role Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Director, Food Science and Development Section, the Food Scientist - Crops/Bakery provides project leadership in value added product development and processing for clients and stakeholders based in Alberta.
The Food Scientist - Crops/Bakery is responsible for advancing value added product development and processing through working with industry, initiating, designing, conducting and directing product and process development in all commodity sectors with an emphasis on crops and bakery products, as well as speciality food products such as condiments and sauces. Projects may include benchtop development, pilot plant scale-up, overseeing of interim processing at the Food Processing Development Centre and/or onsite development at the client facilities. This scientific position provides consultation and advice to industry clients and other Food Science And Development Section (FSAD) team members. The scientist will lead innovative projects, contributing to the launch of new products and processes fostering strategic processing and business alliances with industry stakeholders.
Working with industry clients, the Food Scientist - Crops/Bakery will require a detailed understanding of the technical and scientific aspects of food processing as well as developed competency skills necessary for effective communication with industry clients and management of multiple projects.

**Qualifications**:
**Required**:
- **Masters degree, DVM or MD** preferably in Food Science or related field with **4 years** experience in the food processing industry with specific experience in crops processing, bakery and specialty foods (condiments/sauce).
- **A valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract.**
**Equivalency**:
- **Ph.D. **in a scientific discipline related to the position, plus** 2 years** progressively responsible related experience.
- **University graduation** in a related field, plus **6 years** related experience.
**Assets**:
- Specialized knowledge of crops and bakery related processing technologies and speciality food (such as sauces and condiments) processing.
- Specialized knowledge of analytical techniques and assessment of physicochemical and rheological properties.
- Knowledge of policy and regulations for the processed food sectors.
- Knowledge of global trends in agriculture, food and related industries.
- Knowledge of the individual food processors in the province.
- Knowledge of Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information System).
- Project management skills to coordinate several concurrent projects and deliver accurate and high-quality results within an appropriate timeframe.
- Creativity and originality in product/process development and problem solving.
- Possess leadership skills with adaptability and flexibility to work in a team environment for the common project goal.
- Effective communication and listening skills to understand client’s needs and to effectively disseminate information and results to individual clients or large groups.
