Read, interpret and study plans, drawings and sketches to determine technical specifications and calculate material requirements.
- Prepare layouts, using measuring tools, taking into account building code requirements.
- Measure, cut, shape and assemble components made of wood, chipboard, light steel or other materials.
- Erect foundations, install floor beams, lay flooring support, assemble pre-assembled structural and roofing elements.
- Fit and install millwork (such as interior doors, moldings, shelves, storage space, wall coverings, wood stairs, wood flooring and hardware, etc.).
- Build partitions and finish building interiors.
- Maintain, repair and renovate housing and wooden structures in factories, mines, hospitals, industrial facilities and other establishments.

- May prepare estimates for customers.
- May supervise the work of apprentices and day laborers.
- Basic geometric and mathematical knowledge is essential for the design and layout of structures. Computer skills are increasingly required to use the software available in this field.
